Turizm potansiyeli tam ve doğru saptanmadığı takdirde, yanlış yerler, yanlış zamanda, yanlış faaliyetlerle turizme açılabilir. Sonuç olarak da yörenin mevcut verilerini kaybedilmesi veya yapılan yatırımın geri dönüşümünün sağlanamaması gibi çevresel ve ekonomik kayıpları beraberinde getirebilir. Bu bağlamda; bir yöre turizme açılmadan, yörenin turizm potansiyelinin ve taşıma kapasitesinin çok iyi bir şekilde analiz edilip değerlendirilmesi ve sürdürülebilirliğinin önündeki engellerin kaldırılması önemli olduğu söylenebilir. Bu çalışmanın temel amacı; Giresun İli sınırları içerisinde turizmin sürdürülebilir kalkınma ilkelerine uygun bir model geliştirmektir. Çalışmanın teorik çerçevesinde yerel turizm potansiyelinin tespitinin önemi, SWOT (FÜTZ) analizi, yerel destinasyonlarda turizm potansiyelinin belirlenmesinde SWOT (FÜTZ) analizi kavramı, Giresun ve yöresinin yöresel özellikleri ve mevcut turizm potansiyeli konularına açıklık getirilmeye çalışılmıştır. Çalışmanın alan araştırmasında elde edilen bulgulara dayalı olarak, Giresun ve yöresi turizm potansiyelinin güçleri, zayıflıkları, gelecek ile ilgili fırsatları ve tehditleri tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Çalışmanın son bölümünde ise elde edilen bulgulara dayalı olarak, Giresun ve yöresinin SWOT (FÜTZ) matrisi çıkarılarak yörenin turizm gelişimi için yapılması gerekenler önerilmektedir.Researching the convenience level to tourism and determining the tourism potential in a right way is very important for a region in the adoptation process in to the changing and developing tourism activities. In the event of wrong determined tourism potential there is a possibility of opening wrong places to tourism with wrong activities in wrong seasons. As a result, this situation may cause environmental damages and economic loss as loosing of tourism values and insufficiency in the returning of investments. In this respect, It might be mentioned that It is important to analyse and evaluate the tourism potential and carrying capacity of a region and to remove the obstacles infront of the sustainability. The basic aim of this study is to develop a model loyal to sustainable development principles for Giresun province. In the theoritical framework of the study, topics as the importance of determining the local tourism potential, the concept of SWOT analysis, SWOT analysis in the process of determining the tourism potential of local destinations and local characteristics and tourism potential of Giresun are clarified. The strong and weak aspects of and opportunities and threats to Giresun tourism potential are determined based on the field study.
