Öğe Angiotensin-converting enzyme insertion/deletion gene polymorphism in patients with familial multiple cerebral cavernous malformations(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2010) Altas, M.; Bayrak, O. F.; Cerci, A.; Isik, N.; Celik, M.; Culha, M.; Sahin, F.Cavernous malformations can occur in both sporadic and autosomal dominant forms. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential role of insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphisms of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene in the development of cerebral cavernous malformations (CCM). Forty-one members of two families affected by familial CCM were included in this study. DNA was isolated from peripheral venous blood, and polymerase chain reaction analysis was used to detect I/D polymorphisms of the ACE gene, using HACE3s and HACE3as as primers. Only 10 participants had MRI-confirmed CCM. Of these 10 subjects, seven had the I/D, two had the DID, and one had the I/I genotype. Of the remaining 31 subjects, 14 had the I/I, 13 had the I/D, and four had the D/D genotype. There was a greater proportion of subjects with the D allele among those with MRI-confirmed CCM than among those without (p<0.05). These results suggest that the D polymorphism of the ACE gene may be involved in the pathogenesis of familial CCM. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. E.; Candir, E. E.; Dilbaz, R.The objective of this study was to determine the changes in the quality of the 'Big Top' and 'Perfect Delight' nectarine cultivars grown in Mersin (Yenice/Tarsus). Fruits were obtained from trees grafted on GF-677 rootstock and planted 3x5 m in an orchard of Uni Tarim. Fruit width, length and height, weight, weight/diameter, skin and flesh color, fruit flesh firmness, total soluble solid (TSS), titratable acidity (TA), juice pH and TSS/TA were measured on fruit samples collected from tagged trees from after thinning in the period of small fruit to ripening at a 7-15 days interval during fruit development. Data indicated that fruit flesh firmness, TSS, skin color especially a* value of CIE L*a*b* and weight/diameter were important criteria in determining optimum harvest maturity. Based on all the criteria, the second and the third weeks of June were the optimum harvest time for 'Big Top' and 'Perfect Delight' cultivars in order to deliver fruit at optimum commercial maturity and quality and to obtain adequate storage time.Öğe The Cold Storage of Venus Nectarin Cultivars(Univ Namik Kemal, 2006) Ozdemir, A. E.; Erturk, E.; Celik, M.; Dilbaz, R.The objective of this study was to determine storage and shelf life of Venus nectarine cultivar grown in Mersin (Tarsus/Yenice). Fruits were kept at 0 degrees C and % 85-90 degrees C relative humidity for 8 weeks. In addition, three replicates of fruits removed from storage room at a week interval were kept at 20 degrees C and % 65-70 degrees C relative humidity for 6 days. Percent weight loss, skin color (L*, a*, b*), fruit flesh firmness (kg force), total soluble solids (%), pH, titretable acidity (g malic acid / 100 ml), physiological and fungal disorders were determined in the fruit samples taken during cold storage at a week interval and those kept at 20 degrees C at a two-day interval. Weight loss increased during storage and reached to about 5% at the end of storage. Fruit flesh firmness decreased, but still remained above 4 kg-force at the end of 8-week storage. Total soluble solid (%) increased while titretable acidity (%) decreased. As the storage period was extended the shelf life was shortened. Venus nectarine cultivars could be kept at 0 degrees C and 85-90% relative humidity for 7 weeks and could have 4-day shelf life after cold storage.Öğe Effects of Some Weed Control Methods on Stigma in Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) Cultivation(Tarbiat Modares Univ, 2023) Asil, H.; Tasgin, S.; Celik, M.; Uremis, I.Saffron is an important medicine, spice, dye, and cosmetic plant, and weeds limit its production and increase the related costs of management. This study aimed to determine effective control methods against weeds in saffron cultivation and find the effects of weed control on crown development, stigma yield, and daughter corm yield and quality. The study was established in the production periods of 2019-2021, at Hatay Olive Research Institute, Hassa Station, Turkey, based on completely randomized blocks design with 14 treatments and 3 replications. Results indicated that the highest effect (100%) on weeds was recorded for U5 (pine sawdust+benfluralin) and U6 (textile mulch) applications and the lowest effect was obtained from U13 (2,4-D amine) application at the first and second year of the study. The best quality criteria of saffron were achieved in U6 and U4 (pine sawdust) applications for corm production, and U6, U5, and U4 applications for quality daughter corm production.Öğe Family functioning and its clinical correlates in overweight and obese patients(Editrice Kurtis S R L, 2011) Bez, Y.; Ari, M.; Gokce, C.; Celik, M.; Kaya, H.AIM: Our aim is to evaluate the differences in family functioning and anxiety between normal, overweight, and obese subjects. METHOD: Overweight and obese patients were selected from the outpatient clinic of internal medicine department of a university hospital. Patients were classified into three groups as normal weight (N=82), overweight (N=33) and obese (N=50) patients. The normal weight group included healthy subjects. The individuals were examined by the same psychiatrist (MA). Beck Anxiety Inventory and Family Assessment Device were applied to all groups. RESULTS: When compared to normal weight patients, obese and overweight patients had significantly higher anxiety scores and higher scores in general functions, problem solving, communication, roles, affective responsiveness, and behavior control dimensions which reflect increased dysfunctions in their families. The total level of dysfunction that patients experience was predicted by alcohol dependence in the family during childhood period, any medical disorder in the current family, anxiety level and body mass index. CONCLUSION: When treating them clinicians should keep in mind that families of obese and overweight patients may have higher levels of dysfunctions. (Eating Weight Disord. 16: e257-e262, 2011). D.; Karazincir, S.; Yonden, Z.; Korkmaz, I.; Celik, E.BackgroundPsoriasis is associated with coronary artery disease, and ischemic heart disease is associated with increased amounts of epicardial fat tissue (EFT). There has as yet been no study published on the accumulation of EFT in patients with psoriasis. AimTo compare epicardial fat accumulation and coronary artery calcium score (CACS) in patients with psoriasis and controls. MethodsWe enrolled 38 patients with psoriasis and 38 controls matched for age and gender. Epicardial fat area (EFA) and CACS were evaluated by multidetector computed tomography. ResultsMean EFA in patients with psoriasis was significantly higher than in controls (13.88.4 vs. 9.7 +/- 6.4cm(2), respectively, P=0.02), but mean CACS did not differ significantly between the two groups (55.2 +/- 65.4 vs. 27.8 +/- 29.3; P>0.05). Multiple linear regression analyses indicated that EFA was significantly associated with waist circumference and presence of coronary artery calcification in both patients and controls, whereas EFA was significantly associated waist circumference and age in patients only (P<0.05). ConclusionsPatients with psoriasis had a higher level of EFA compared with controls, and EFA was independently associated with the presence of CAC in all study subjects.
