Effects of Seminal Plasma Composition on Sperm Motility in Mirror Carp (Cyprinus carpio)
(Israeli Journal Of Aquaculture-Bamidgeh, 2009) Bozkurt, Yusuf; Ogretmen, Fatih; Secer, Faik Sertel; Ercin, Ugur
    This research provides data concerning the biochemical (ionic and organic) composition of sperm of the mirror carp (Cyprinus carpio) and its relationship to spermatozoa motility. Seminal plasma contained 67.12 +/- 1.06 mM/l Na+, 105.1 +/- 2.24 mM/l K+, 7.85 +/- 0.67 mg/dl Ca(2+), 2.61 +/- 0.11 mEq/l Mg(2+), 0.14 +/- 0.002 g/dl total protein, 10.3 +/- 1.01 mg/dl triglyceride, 6.83 +/- 0.72 mg/dl cholesterol, and 54.72 +/- 3.49 mg/dl urea. A positive relationship (p<0.05) was determined between Na(+) and motility (r = 0.522). On the other hand, Ca(2+), K(+), and Mg(2+) ions negatively correlated (p>0.05) with motility (r = -0.565, r = -0.160, and r = -0.184, respectively). Spermatozoa motility correlated negatively (p>0.05) with protein (r = -0.233), triglyceride (r = -0.348), and urea (r = -0.331) but positively with cholesterol (r = 0.012). This information will help to develop cryopreservation procedures, to meet species-specific extender requirements, and to optimize artificial fertilization procedures in mirror carp.

Relationship Between Seminal Plasma Composition and Spermatological Parameters in Scaly Carp (Cyprinus carpio)
(Medwell Online, 2009) Bozkurt, Yusuf; Ogretmen, Fatih; Secer, Faik Sertel; Ercin, Ugur
    The present study was conducted to evaluate seminal plasma composition, spermatological parameters and their relationships in scaly carp (Cyprinus carpio). Seminal plasma contained 71.18 +/- 3.40 mML(-1) (Na(+)), 87.48 +/- 4.42 mML(-1) (K(+)), 10.64 +/- 1.50 mg dL(-1) (Ca(2+)), 2.57 +/- 0.19 mEq L(-1) (Mg(2+)), 0.12 +/- 0.04 g dL(-1) total protein, 1.43 +/- 0.02 mg dL(-1) glucose, 7.82 +/- 2.60 mg dL(-1) triglyceride, 6.27 +/- 2.32 mg dL(-1) cholesterol, 24.45 +/- 7.98 mg dL(-1) urea. The following spermatological parameters were found: sperm volume 13.17 +/- 5.39 mL, sperm motility 63.18 +/- 7.16%, movement duration 56.81 +/- 20.32 s, sperm concentration 29.637 +/- 1.07 x 10(9) mL(-1), total sperm concentration 419.200 +/- 29.62 x 10(9) and pH 7.59 +/- 0.74. The K(+) and Ca(2+) ions correlated positively with motility (r = 0.215, p>0.05 and r = 0.048, p>0.05), respectively. On the other hand, Na(+) and Mg(2+) ions correlated negatively with motility (r = -0.067, p>0.05, r = -0.407, p>0.05), respectively. Significant correlations were observed between K(+) and Na(+) (r = -0.695, p<0.05), protein and triglyceride (r = 0.786, p<0.01), protein and cholesterol (r = 0.936, p<0.01), triglyceride and cholesterol (r = 0.802, p<0.01). These parameters can be used to prepare species-specific extenders for short-term storage and cryopreservation of scaly carp sperm.

Seminal plasma composition and its relationship with physical spermatological parameters of Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) semen: with emphasis on sperm motility
(Wiley-Blackwell, 2008) Bozkurt, Yusuf; Oegretmen, Fatih; Ercin, Ugur; Yildiz, Uemmueguelsuem
    In this research, the mineral and organic composition of the seminal plasma, physical spermatological parameters and their physiological relationships were investigated in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). The seminal plasma contained 98.14 +/- 5.23 mM L(-1) (Na(+)), 380.85 +/- 25.95 mM L(-1) (K(+)), 30.25 +/- 4.96 mg dL(-1) (Ca(2+)), 19.16 +/- 1.70 mEq L(-1) (Mg(2+)), 1.36 +/- 0.11 mg dL(-1) glucose, 0.37 +/- 0.08 g dL(-1) total protein, 12.02 +/- 1.18 mg dL(-1) cholesterol, 14.85 +/- 1.50 mg dL(-1) triglyceride and 43.5 +/- 9.56 mg dL(-1) urea. The following spermatological parameters were found: sperm volume 14.44 +/- 1.16 mL, sperm motility 80.60 +/- 1.55%, movement duration 67.68 +/- 4.32 s, density 15.43 +/- 0.72 x 10(9) mL(-1), total density 337.43 + 45.86 x 10(9) and pH 7.24 +/- 0.17. The Na(+) and Ca(2+) ions correlated negatively with spermatozoa motility (r = -0.453, P > 0.05 and r = -0.192, P > 0.05) respectively. The K(+) ion correlated positively with spermatozoa motility (r = 0.545, P > 0.05). But a statistically significant correlation was not observed between sperm motility and seminal plasma parameters. The following correlations were observed between mineral and organic components. The Mg(2+) was positively correlated with glucose and cholesterol (r = 0.692, P < 0.05 and r = 0.680, P < 0.05) respectively. A highly significant positive relationship was also found between Mg(2+) and total protein (r = 0.837, P < 0.01). On the other hand, a significantly negative relationship was found between Ca(2+) and triglyceride (r = -0.639, P < 0.05). These parameters should be considered when developing procedures for either artificial fertilization or for cryopreservation of grass carp sperm.
