Öğe The Effect of Supplementation of Fennel (Foeniculum Vulgare Mill.) to the Feed on Egg Production, Slaughter and Carcass Characteristics, Formation of Parasites in the Intestine and Spermatological Quality in Japanese Quail During the Laying Period(2022) Çetin, Nurdan Coşkun; Erdem, İpek; Durusoy, Ömer Faruk; Alaşahan, Sema; Çimrin, TülayThis study was carried out to determine the effects of supplementation of ground fennel to quail rations on egg production, slaughter, intestinal parasites, and semen quality. For this purpose, 48 female and 24 male quails were used in the study. The experimental groups consisted of the control group with basal feed + 0% ground fennel, and the GF1, GF2, and GF4 groups with ground fennel-supplemented basal feed by 1%, 2%, and 4% respectively, also each group was designed in pairs. The weekly live weight values were found to be numerically higher in the groups with fennel-supplemented rations than in the control group. In addition, the live weight values of female and male quails were also numerically higher in the groups with fennel-supplemented rations. Egg weight, egg production, and feed intake of female quails were high, especially in the GF2 group. Furthermore, the feed conversion ratio was superior in the GF2 group. Regarding the slaughter and carcass parts, the fennel-supplemented groups were numerically higher than the control group. It was observed that the oviduct weight increased with the growing fennel ratio. In addition, the fennel supplementation increased the semen concentration in male quails. The increasing fennel addition enhanced the abnormal and dead spermatozoa rates and decreased semen motility. As a result of the macroscopic examination of the intestinal lumen of the quails in the control and fennel-supplemented groups, no adult helminths were detected; however, Giardia spp.-like cysts were observed. As a result, the usage of ground fennel as a feed additive by 2% had a positive effect on yield characteristics of female quails, and the use by 1% had a positive effect on male quails. Consequently, the usage of ground fennel as a feed additive would be beneficial in quail farming.Öğe Exploratory laparotomic diagnosis of renal cystic echinococcosis in a domestic cat from Hatay province of Türkiye and its molecular confirmation(2022) Erdem, İpek; Zerek, Aykut; Elmacıoğlu, Sibel; Yaman, Mehmet; Deveci, Mehmet Zeki Yılmaz; Kırgız, ÖmerThis case report was prepared to provide information about cystic echinococcosis detected in a twelve years old domestic cat during experimental laparotomy. In the anamnesis, there was a complaint of progressive abdominal swelling. As a result of clinical and radiological examinations, unknown intraabdominal formations were detected. At laparotomy, multiple cysts were detected on the right and left kidneys. Molecular analysis revealed that these cystic structures are larval forms of Echinococcus granulosus. The cysts are often found in the liver and lungs but they can arise less commonly in the brain, kidneys, muscle, bone and heart. Renal cystic echinococcosis is rare and this note describes it, confirmed by molecular analysis in a domestic cat. For this reason, it is thought that this note will contribute to the literature.Öğe The first case of Bovicola (Werneckiella) ocellatus (Piaget, 1880) (Phthiraptera: Ischnocera: Trichodectidae) on a donkey (Equus asinus Linnaeus, 1758) in Turkey(Ankara Üniversitesi, 2020) Dik, Bilal; Erdem, İpek; Zerek, Aykut; Karagöz, Mustafa; Yaman, MehmetAbstract: In the clinical examination of a donkey, which brought to the Ownerless Animal Care and Rehabilitation Center of the Hatay Metropolitan Municipality due to neglecting and senility, local hair losses, ruffling and opacity were observed. A few louse specimens were detected on the hair shafts on the back of the donkey during the macroscopic examination. They were collected with a forceps, and preserved in a tube with alcohol 70%. Then they examined in detail in microscope, and identified as Bovicola ocellatus (Piaget, 1880). The presence of B. ocellatus on donkey has been reported for the first time in Turkey in this paper.Öğe The First Case of Menacanthus pallidulus (Neumann, 1912) (Phthiraptera: Amblycera: Menoponidae) on A Chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus Linnaeus, 1758) in Türkiye(2024) Şimşek, Fatma Nuray; Erdem, İpek; Zerek, Aykut; Dik, Bilal; Yaman, MehmetThis case report was prepared to provide information about Menacanthus pallidulus (Neumann, 1912), which was detected for the first time on a domestic chicken in Hatay province of Türkiye. Louse specimens collected from a chicken by a student were brought to Hatay Mustafa Kemal University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Parasitology, and sent to Selçuk University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Parasitology, for identification of species and microscopic examination revealed the presence of Menacanthus pallidulus (Neumann, 1912). Thus, with this study, the presence of M. pallidulus on domestic chickens was recorded for the first time in Türkiye.; Bu olgu sunumu, Türkiye’nin Hatay ilinde, evcil bir tavukta ilk kez tespit edilen Menacanthus pallidulus (Neumann, 1912) hakkında bilgi vermek için hazırlanmıştır. Bir öğrenci tarafından tavuktan toplanan bit örnekleri Hatay Mustafa Kemal Üniversitesi Veteriner Fakültesi, Parazitoloji Anabilim Dalı’na getirilmiş, tür teşhisi için Selçuk Üniversitesi Veteriner Fakültesi, Parazitoloji Anabilim Dalı’na gönderilen örneklerin mikroskobik inceleme sonucu Menacanthus pallidulus (Neumann, 1912) olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Böylece bu çalışma ile evcil tavukta saptanan M. pallidulus’un, Türkiye’deki varlığı ilk kez kaydedilmiştir.Öğe The First Record Pseudolynchia canariensis (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) in An Eurasian Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo Linnaeus, 1758) in Turkey(Kafkas Üniversitesi, 2019) Erdem, İpek; Zerek, Aykut; Yaman, MehmetConsidering host preferences and morphologies, the Hippoboscidae family, known as a louse-fly, bird fly, tick fly, forest fly is a blood-sucking ectoparasites of domestic and wild animals. Although they have certain host preferences, when they need it they can suck blood from other hosts or even people. The Hippoboscidae family includes 3 subfamilies: Lipopteninae, Ornithomyinae and Hippoboscinae, Pseudolynchia canariensis (Mcquart, 1840), which one of the species belong to Ornithomyinae subfamily parasitic in poultry, plays a role in transmission of Haemoproteus columbae to domestic pigeons [1]. Bubo bubo known as Eurasian Eagle-Owl take part in Bubo genus which belong to Strigidae family, which has a variety of habitats showing distinct morphological and anatomical features and activating at night are birds. They often live alone and feed in various arthropods such as fish, reptiles, birds and mice .Öğe Hatay İlinde Kedi ve Köpeklerde 2015-2022 Yılları Arasında Tetrathyridiosis Olgularının Retrospektif Analizi(2024) Zerek, Aykut; Erdem, İpek; Aydenizöz, Meral; Karagöz, Mustafa; Yaman, MehmetPeritoneal tetrathyridiosis kedi ve köpeklerde genellikle asemptomatik seyretmesi nedeniyle çeşitli operasyonlarda veya nekropsilerde tesadüfen rastlanan ve nadir görülen paraziter bir hastalıktır. Hatay ilinde kedi ve köpeklerde tetrathyridium varlığının araştırıldığı bu retrospektif çalışma, Türkiye’de ilk çalışma olma niteliğindedir.Öğe Parasites Detected in Hatay Mountain Gazelles (Gazella gazella)(2022) Zerek, Aykut; Erdem, İpek; Yaman, Mehmet; Aydenizöz, Meral; Şimşek, Fatma Nuray; Altuğ, MuhammedThe current study aimed to detect parasites in Hatay Mountain Gazelles (Gazella gazella), which are categorized as endangered according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The present study was conducted in Hatay Mountain Gazelle Wildlife Development Area, where 40 gazelles inhabited (30 ?, 10 ?), 15 of which were over three years old as well-considered adults. Fecal samples were taken from 60 fecal foci immediately after the defecation of the gazelles. Each of the fecal samples was analysed with Benedek sedimentation, Fülleborn flotation and Bearman-Wetzel methods and examined under a light microscope. In addition, Ixodid ticks were collected from an injured gazelle which was brought to Hatay Mustafa Kemal University, Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, then were identified under the stereomicroscope. Nematodirus spp. (5/60, 8%), Marshallagia spp. (4/60, 7%), Trichostrongylus spp. (3/60, 5%) eggs, Dictiyocaulus filaria larvae (3/60, 5%) and Eimeria spp. oocysts (9/60, 15%) were determined based on the microscopic examination. Ixodid tick samples were identified as Rhipicephalus turanicus (2 ?, 3 ?). Thus this is the first report of the existence of parasites in Hatay Mountain Gazelles in Turkey. It is thought that skin and fecal examinations should be performed to prevent parasitic diseases in gazelles.
