Dynamic analysis of large-scale SSI systems for layered unbounded media via a parallelized coupled finite-element/boundary-element/scaled boundary finite-element model
(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2012) Genes, M. Cemal
An algorithm for a parallelized coupled model based on finite element method (FEM), boundary element method (BEM), and scaled boundary FEM (SBFEM) for harmonic and transient dynamic response of large-scale 20 structures embedded in or on layered soil media is presented. The BEM and SBFEM are used for modelling the dynamic response of the unbounded media. The standard FEM is used for modelling the finite region and the embedded structure. The objective of the development of this parallelized coupled model is to use the power of high performance computing, and to take into account the advantages and evade the disadvantages of the above mentioned numerical methods for modelling of the unbounded media in soil-structure interaction (SSI) systems. The development of the parallel algorithm for this model is essential for solving arbitrarily shaped large-scale SSI problems, which cannot be solved within reasonable elapsed times by a serial algorithm. The efficiency of the proposed parallel algorithm and the validity of the coupled model are shown by means of three numerical examples, indicating the excellent accuracy and applicability of the parallel algorithm with considerable time-savings in large-scale problems. Estimating shear wave velocity using acceleration data in Antakya (Turkey)
(Univ Nacional De Colombia, 2014) Buyuksarac, Aydin; Over, Semir; Genes, M. Cemal; Bikce, Murat; Kacin, Selcuk; Bektas, Ozcan
This manuscript presents a site response analysis and an estimation of S-wave velocity that are dependent on acceleration data. First, existing data, such as density, seismic wave velocity, and soil cross-sections, are obtained from previous seismic microzonation studies and used to prepare input data for a suite of MATLAB routines, which are referred to as SUA software. Acceleration data are obtained from four free-field strong-motion stations of the SERAMAR project, which was conducted between 2006 and 2009 in conjunction with a Turkish-German joint research project, and inputted into the software as basic data. The results include a 1D velocity cross-section versus depth and an amplification model of the site. Three different depth levels can be determined for the ranges of 0-5 m, 5-15 m and 15-25 m. The seismic velocities vary between 380 and 470 m s-1 for the first 5 m; 320 and 480 m s-1 for 5-15 m; and 470 and 750 m s-1 for 15-25 m. These results are comparable with the amplification values from the microtremor data from previous studies. The 1D velocity models are appropriate for the soil conditions.

Seismic Risk Assessment and Mitigation in the Antakya-Maras Region (SERAMAR): Empirical Studies on the Basis of EMS-98
(Earthquake Engineering Research Inst, 2013) Abrahamczyk, Lars; Schwarz, Jochen; Langhammer, Tobias; Genes, M. Cemal; Bikce, Murat; Kacin, Selcuk; Gulkan, Polat
The main objective of the SERAMAR project has been to utilize current tools for earthquake risk assessment and to establish a unique partnership between universities, professional associations, and local governments, which might serve as a model for similar future activities in Turkey and adjacent areas. In order to reach this goal, a thorough microzonation survey program combined with vulnerability and social preparedness studies in anticipation of a damaging seismic event were conducted. The paper is focused on activities related to surveying building stock and classifying and evaluating through the use of different levels of consideration. Empirical risk scenarios and casualty estimations are carried out for different levels of consideration under scenario earthquakes similar in size to historic events. Preliminary findings of the pilot phase are reported in terms of credible building performance and casualty estimates. For empirical studies, the building vulnerabilities are expressed in terms of vulnerability classes of EMS-98.
