    A comparison of three methods producing grafted vines

    The effects of three different methods and two media for obtaining grafted vines were studied by using King's Ruby grapevine cultivar and 5 BE, 41 B, 110 R and 1103 P rootstocks. The methods used were rooting the stocks before grafting, rooting the stocks after grafting, holding the grafted cuttings in water after grafting and rooting. After grafting, all grafts were kept in a callusing room at 27+/-1 degrees C and 80 % relative humidity for 23 days. Based upon percentage graft take and the percentage of first-class vines obtained, the second method was best( 93 % graft take 84 % fist class vines). Among rootstocks, 41 B produced the highest percentage (63 %) of grafted vines, whereas 41 B, 1103 P, and 5 BE gave the highest percentages of first-class vines (48, 45, and 44 %, respectively). Rooting media did not affect response.

    Effects of different planting densities on the vegetative growth, yield and fruit quality of loquat

    The Turkish Mediterranean region has the most suitable ecological conditions for growing loquat. In 1999, 97% of total loquat production of Turkey was from the coastal zone of the Mediterranean region. This study was conducted in Hatay, which is located in the eastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey, and was aimed to research the advantages of high density over conventional planting densities. Gold Nugget, Sayda and Hafif Cukurgobek loquat cultivars were propagated by budding at the Horticulture Department, Agriculture Faculty, Mustafa Kemal University, Hatay, Turkey, in 1996. These young trees were planted at three different planting distances (3x3m, 3x6 m and 6x6 m) and pruned to an open-centre system in an experimental orchard in May 1997. Phenological observations, pornological characteristics, yield per tree and per unit area were determined. With increasing planting density, yields per tree decreased while cumulative yields per hectare increased. According to the three year data, the highest cumulative yield (yield/tree and yield/hectare) was obtained from Hafif Cukurgobek with 9.15 kg/tree and 1882 kg/hectare, respectively. The highest cumulative yield per unit was obtained with the 3x3 m spacing (7165kg/ha), followed by 3x6 m and 6x6 m with 4056 kg/ha and 2200 kg/ha, respectively.

    Investigation on the adaptation of some low-chill apricot cultivars to Kirikhan (Turkey) ecological conditions

    This research was carried out between 1996 and 2001 at the experimental apricot orchard of the Horticulture Department, Agriculture Faculty, Mustafa Kemal University, Hatay, Kirikhan/Turkey. In the experiment, five low chill cultivars of the apricot (Priana, Feriana, Canino, Precoce de Colomer, Precoce de Tyrinthe) were used as materials. In these cultivars, certain phenological and pomological characteristics such as flowering period, average fruit weight, fruit dimensions, flesh/seed ratio, acidity and total soluble solids (TSS) were examined. In addition, the vegetative growth of the cultivars was evaluated by measuring the trunk diameters and lengths of annual shoots. Over six years, the highest average fruit weight was obtained from 'Precoce de Tyrinthe' (31.92 g), whereas the weight of 'Precoce de Colomer's' fruits was the lowest (20.52 g). The flesh/seed ratio was the highest in the 'Precoce de Tyrinthe'. 'Priana' had the highest TSS content with 15.10%, whereas 'Precoce de Tyrinthe' had the lowest TSS value with 10.33%. 'Priana' ripened the earliest (20 May), while 'Precoce de Colomer' was the latest ripening cv. (3-5 June).
