Öğe The Effect of Dried Sweet Potato (Ipomea batatas) Vines on Egg Yolk Color and some Egg Yield Parameters(Friends Science Publ, 2011) Kaya, Serafettin; Yildirim, HakanEffects of dried vines powder of sweet potato cultivars 'Hatay Beyazi', 'Hatay Kirmizi' and 'Beauregard' on egg yolk color were determined in layers aged 44-52 week. In this study, 176 layers were equally divided into 11 groups including negative control (no pigments), positive control (commercial layer diet) and three sweet potato varieties with three doses (3 x 3) at 15, 20, 25 mg/kg total xanthophylls. The internal and external quality characteristics of the Monday and Thursday eggs were recorded. Egg yolk score were classified by visual with Roche Color Fan (RCF) and Minolta refractometer. Egg production, feed intake, live weight and feed conversion ratio were calculated weekly. The highest RCF value 3.96 was obtained from those fed with 'Hatay Kirmizi'. The greatest a and b values were recovered at the 25 mg/kg dose of 'Hatay Kirmizi' compared to the other sources. In conclusion, to obtain the desired level of RCF values in the egg yolk, the dried vines powder of 'Hatay Kirmizi' having natural carotenoid content can be used as a natural pigmenter in layer diet. (C) 2011 Friends Science PublishersÖğe Effects of a semi-intensive raising system on growth performance, carcass traits and meat quality of broiler chicks(Agricultural Research Communication Centre, 2018) Kaya, Serafettin; Yildirim, HakanThe present study was carried out to compare the growth performance and carcass yield of broiler chickens reared in semi-intensive and conventional systems (Ross 308, n=120). Chickens were raised in a pen on wooden shavings for 21 days. On day 21 of age, chicks were assigned to 2 treatments (indoor treatment and semi-intensive treatment). The experiment was conducted at until 6 weeks of age. Production system has a significant effect on wing (P<0.05) and heart weight (P<0.01), but has no any effect on final body weight, hot or cold carcass weight, thigh, breast, back and neck, gizzard, liver and abdominal fat weights (P>0.05). The final body weight, hot and cold carcass weight, thigh, wings and heart weights were affected by sex of birds (p<0.05) while breast, back, liver, gizzard and abdominal fat were not affected by sex (P>0.05). The nutrient level of carcass parts was not influenced by production system or sex (P>0.05). In our study, breast of birds reared under semi-intensive system had significantly lower 'L' (P<0.05), higher 'a' statistically different (P<0.01); while 'b' value was significantly (P<0.01) higher in skin of semi-intensive reared birds.Öğe Effects of molasses and ground wheat additions on the quality of groundnut, sweet potato, and Jerusalem artichoke tops silages(Academic Journals, 2010) Kaya, Serafettin; Caliskan, Mehmet EminIn this study, the effects of molasses (M) and ground wheat (GW) additions on the quality of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) (GN), sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) (SP) and Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) (JA) tops silages were investigated. GW and M were added in the silages at 0, 2, 4 and 6% in fresh matter basis (W0, W2, W4, W6 and M0, M2, M4, M6). Additions of the silage additives increased the DM of the silages (P<0.01). Compared with the silages having no additives, CP contents of the silages supplemented with both silage additives were higher. Four percent GW added SP silage had more CP content (11.59%) while 6% GW added JA had less CP content (4.7%). Except for JA silage (P > 0.05), M and GW decreased pH in the GN and SW tops silages (P < 0.01). The ADF, NDF and ADL contents were significantly decreased (P < 0.001) by increased level of GW and M. The lactic acid contents of the GN silages with 2 and 4% GW and SP silage with 6 % GW were lower than the desired level (2%). Flieg scores of all silages were excellent, except GN silages added with 0, 2 and 4% GW which had good score.Öğe The Effects of Outdoor Housing and Cafeteria Feeding on Growth Performance and Feeding Behaviour of Awassi Lambs Kept in Hot Climate Condition(Medwell Online, 2011) Kaya, SerafettinStudy was carried out to determine the effects of shade allowance and cafeteria feeding on feeding behaviour of Awassi lambs kept in hot climate condition. The two housing methods indoor and outdoor and two feeding methods (single and cafeteria feeding) were tested (ISF, OSF, ICF and OCF). The thirty two lambs 3 months old male were divided into four groups and housed individually for 42 days. Results showed that daily gain, feed efficiency, the intake of water, protein, energy and fibre, the selection of energy, protein and fibre and water/feed ratio were affected by treatments (p<0.05). Indoor lambs, made a diet containing 29.27% B, 27.10% C, 11.63% CSM, 3.30% FFS, 19.17% A and 9.52% WB while outdoor ones made a diet having 24.75% B, 27,12 C, 9.60% CSM, 9.22% FFS, 16.12% A and 13.20% WB. Eating, drinking and standing were significant at (p>0.05) while ruminating and lying were significant at (p<0.001) respective groups ISF, OSF, ICF and OCF. In conclusion, single fed Awassi lambs kept in outdoor in hot climate showed less ruminating but more lying behaviour while given opportunity to choose a diet they ate more concentrate feed ingredients such as full fat soya and wheat bran without changing their behaviour patterns. Cafeteria feeding in lambs allows physiological arrangements against heat stress in outdoor housing condition by dietary self selection and by tuning respiratory and circulatory systems.Öğe Nutrient Contents and Gossypol Levels of Cotton Seed Meal Produced in Hatay Region of Turkey(Asian Journal Of Chemistry, 2009) Kaya, Serafettin; Ustaoglu, AkinThe aim of the study were to determine the nutrient contents and gossypol levels of upland type (Gossypium hirsutum) whole cotton seed and cotton seed meal produced in Hatay region of Turkey as an important potential raw material for animal feeding operations. The whole cotton seed and cotton seed meal materials were seven commercial hybrid seeds, expeller (13 samples) and extraction system (I sample), respectively. Nutrient analyzes showed that there were significant differences between whole cotton seeds with respect to dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), ether extract (EE) and ash contents (p < 0.01) while crude protein (CP), nitrogen free extract (NFE) and crude fiber (CF) were not significant between each other (p > 0.05). Free gossypol levels of whole cotton seed were 0.362, 0,440, 0.478, 0.493, 0.510, 0.526 and 0.591 % in GW-Teks, BA-151, BA-320, SG-125, BA-119, Sahin 2000 and BA-308 samples, respectively. The crude protein and ether extract contents of expeller and extraction cotton seed meal were determined 21.50, 40.14 and 9.16, 1.30 %, respectively. Free gossypol level of either extraction or expeller cotton seed meal was 0.06 % in average and no significant difference (p > 0.05), Both nutrient contents and gossypol levels of whole cotton seed and cotton seed meal seemed to be similar with the reported results, except the crude protein content of expeller cotton seed meal.Öğe Olive cake usage as an alternative to cotton seed meal in dairy goat feeding(Academic Journals, 2010) Gul, Sabri; Keskin, Mahmut; Kaya, SerafettinThis study was carried out on 23 heads of Damascus (Shami) goats to investigate the utilization of olive cake in (OC) dairy goat feeding as an alternative to cotton seed meal (CSM) at Research Farm of Mustafa Kemal University. Animals, having similar live weight and homogenity for milk yield according to the first lactation (202.2 +/- 10.30 kg per lactation), were assigned into three groups. Goats in each group were fed with 1 kg of concentrate in different composition in addition to pasture per day. Each concentrate of the groups had got same ingredients in similar amount except for olive cake and cotton seed meal. At the end of the study it was determined that the replacement of olive cake to cotton seed meal decreased fat (P<0.05) and protein (P<0.01) percentage of milk without affecting milk yield (P>0.05). In conclusion, we can suggest that lactating Damascus goats could be fed with 10% OC and 10% CSM diets without any negative effects on milk composition and yield. Also usage of olive cake was recommended in goat diets because of its cost.
