Öğe Does subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation affect the static balance at different frequencies?(Elsevier Espana Slu, 2023) Oz, Fatma; Yucekeya, Bircan; Huzmeli, Irem; Yilmaz, AtillaPurpose: To investigate the effects of bilateral subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) with different stimulation frequencies on static balance. Materials and methods: Twenty patients (15 males and 5 females), aged between 43 and 81 (mean: 60.05 +/- 7.4) years, who had been diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) and undergone STN-DBS surgery were included in the study. Static balance was assessed with TecnoBody Rehabilitation System at four different frequencies: 230, 130, 90 and 60 Hz and off-stimulation. Static balance tests were 'stabilometric test, stabilometric compared bipedal closed/opened eye, stabilometric compared mono pedal (right/left foot)'. These tests reported the centre of pressure data 'ellipse area, perimeter, front/back and mediolateral standard deviations'. Results: There were no statically differences between the static balance test results at any frequency (p > 0.05), but results were found better at 90 Hz. Stabilometric compared bipedal opened eye forward-backward standard deviation result was significant between off -stimulation and 130 Hz (p = 0.04). Different frequency stimulation affected the static balance categories percentage with no statistical significance between off-stimulation and others (all p > 0.05). Conclusion: This study showed that STN-DBS did not affect the static balance negatively. Low -frequency (LF) stimulation improved the static equilibrium. Posturography systems will give more precise and quantitative results in similar studies with wide frequency ranges. (c) 2022 Sociedad Espa nola de Neurocirugi ' a. All rights reserved.Öğe Evaluation of the Psychoeducation Given to the Elderly at Nursing Homes for a Healthy Lifestyle and Developing Life Satisfaction(Springer, 2013) Tambag, Hatice; Oz, FatmaThe research was carried out as a pre-test, post-test patterned intervention with one group in order to evaluate the psychoeducation given to older people at nursing homes for a healthy lifestyle and developing life satisfaction. The research was done with 21 female and 21 male older people staying at the state-owned Seyran Baglari Nursing Home/Elderly Caring Rehabilitation Center and the mitkoy Nursing Home. In the psychoeducation program, each session was conducted for a duration of 60-90 min in the nursing homes' education classrooms. After the psychoeducation program, the life satisfaction index, the health promotion lifestyle profile total, and the subscale (nutrition, health responsibility, self realization, stress management, interpersonal support, and exercise) mean scores, significantly increased statistically. It is suggested that the nursing homes' health workers, and especially nurses who work full-time, should promote such psychoeducation.Öğe The role of lateralisation and sex on insular cortex: 3D volumetric analysis(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2021) Oz, Fatma; Acer, Niyazi; Katayifci, Nihan; Aytac, Gunes; Karaali, Kamil; Sindel, MuzafferBackground/aim: The insula has attracted the attention of many neuroimaging studies because of its key role between brain structures. However, the number of studies investigating the effect of sex and laterality on insular volume is insufficient. The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in insular volume between sexes and hemispheres. Materials and methods: A total of 47 healthy participants [24 males (20.08 +/- 1.44 years) and 23 females (19.57 +/- 0.90 years)] underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Imaging was performed using the 3T MRI scanner. The insular volume was measured using the Individual Brain Atlases using Statistical Parametric Mapping (IBASPM); total intracranial, cerebral, grey and white matter volumes were measured using volBrain. Results: The right insular volume was significantly higher than the left insular volume in the participants, and the left cerebral volume was significantly higher than the right cerebral volume (p < 0.05). The total brain, total cerebral, left and right insular, and cerebral volumes were significantly larger in males than in females (p < 0.001). Also, the ratios of the insular volume to total brain and cerebral volume were significantly higher in males than in females (p < 0.05). Conclusion: This study shows that insular volume differs with laterality and sex. This outcome may be explained by the anatomical relationship between the insula and behavioural functions and emotional reactions and the fact that the right side of the brain is best at expressive and creative tasks.Öğe Volumetric analysis of the brain structures of children with down’s syndrome: A 3D MRI study(Ondokuz Mayis Universitesi, 2021) Oz, Fatma; Acer, Niyazi; Ceviz, Yasin; Eroz, Recep; Canatan, Halit; Yucekaya, BircanDown’s syndrome (DS) is one of the most common genetic causes of mental and cognitive retardation. In fact, it results in a number of characteristic neuropsychological and physical symptoms, including mental retardation. The aim of this study was to compare the brain structure volumes of children with DS to those of healthy children using MRI Studio in order to investigate whether there exists correlation between the developmental stages of DS and the results of both the Denver II Developmental Screening Test and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) quantitative analysis. Five children diagnosed with Down’s syndrome (age range = 2–6 years) were matched for gender and age with five healthy comparison subjects. To analyse the overall and regional brain volumes, high-resolution MRI scans were performed and a morphometric analysis was conducted via MRI Studio software. The MRI T1 volumetric images were normalised using a linear transformation, which was followed by large deformation diffeomorphic metric mapping. Significant decreases (p<0.05) in the volumes of the right pons, cerebellum and left superior frontal gyrus (prefrontal cortex) were observed in the children with DS when compared with the control group (p<0.05). Although decreases were detected in the regional volumes of other brain locations, they were not significant (p>0.05). It was further found that the developmental retardation observed in the children with DS, as detected using the Denver II test, increased due to decreases in the volumes of certain regions of the brain, although this was also not statistically significant (p>0.05). The results of this study generally confirm the findings of prior studies concerning the overall patterns of the brain volumes in children with DS and also provide new evidence of the abnormal volumes of specific regional tissue components among such a population. These results suggest that the brain volume reduction associated with DS may primarily be due to early developmental differences rather than neurodegenerative changes © 2021 Ondokuz Mayis Universitesi.
