Öğe Determination of oxidative stress and effect of erdosteine on rhinitis medicamentosa in a rat model(Elsevier Science Bv, 2014) Dokuyucu, Recep; Cevik, Cengiz; Ozler, Gul Soylu; Ozgur, Tumay; Arli, Cengiz; Sefil, Fatih; Yonden, ZaferWe aimed to determine the presence of oxidative stress in rhinitis medicamentosa (RM) and to evaluate the effect of erdosteine (ED) on mucosal changes in a rat model. Twenty-four male rats were used in this experimental study. Three groups were created. Group 1 (n=8) was the control group. Two puffs of 0.05% oxymetazolin were sprayed into the nasal cavities of the remaining rats (n = 16) three times daily for eight weeks. One of these 16 rats was scarified at the end of the eight weeks and examined to confirm the presence of RM. Seven of the remaining 16 rats were killed, and venous blood samples were taken (Group 2). Group 3 (n=8) received 10 mg/kg of an ED suspension orally for seven days. All rats were put on formalin for light microscopy. The total antioxidant status (TAS) was similar in all groups (p = 0.073). The total oxidative status (TOS) of the RM group was significantly higher than that of the control group and RM + ED group (Group 3) (p = 0.003 and p = 0.011, respectively). The pathological recovery of the nasal mucosa of the rats was similar in the RM + ED and control groups. The TOS was high in this RM rat model, and oxidative stress was associated with RM. ED significantly ameliorated nasal mucosal changes induced by RM, suggesting that oxidative stress may play an important role in the pathophysiology of this condition. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. The aim of the study is to assess the quality of sexual life of males with and without halitosis. Material and Method: Males between 20-50 years old; with a complaint of halitosis; married and able to complete the study were included in the study. The control group were healthy, adult, married males who have normal oto-rhinolaryngologic examination. The International Index of Erectile Function questionnaire(IIEF) were used to assess the quality of sexual life of males with halitosis and the results were compared with a similar group of healthy men. Results: A total of 80 adult subjects completed the study. When the groups were compared in terms of age, body mass index(BMI) and duration of marriage, they were similar (p=0.65, p=0.20, p=0.08 respectively). The halitosis group had significantly lower scores for all function domains (p=0.0001). There was no correlation between degree of halitosis and the scores of IIEF (p<0.05). Discussion: This is the first study investigating the sexual health of males with halitosis. Halitosis not only effects oral health status but also strongly declines quality of life. The otorhinolaryngologist must not only treat halitosis but also help the patient to stand up to social and sexual problems concomitting halitosis.Öğe Does menopause effect nasal mucociliary clearance time?(Springer, 2015) Ozler, Gul Soylu; Akbay, Ercan; Akkoca, Ayse Neslin; Karapinar, Oya Soylu; Simsek, Gokce OzelThe aim of this study was to investigate the effect of menopause on nasal mucociliary clearance time by comparing the results of premenopausal and postmenopausal women. A total of 60 women met the criteria and were divided into two groups: premenopausal women (n = 30) and postmenopausal women (n = 30). Nasal mucociliary clearance time of these women was measured and compared. Moreover, the correlation between nasal mucociliary clearance time and menopause duration in postmenopausal women was evaluated. Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) 13.0 Evaluation for Windows. Normal distribution of continuous variables was tested with Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Chi square test was used for comparisons between categorical variables. Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U tests were used for continuous variables when comparing the groups. The statistically significant level was accepted as p value < 0.05. The mean nasal mucociliary clearance time in premenopausal and postmenopausal women was 11.43 +/- A 2.81 (7-16) and 16.76 +/- A 2.73 (12-22), respectively. The mean nasal mucociliary clearance time in postmenopausal women was significantly longer than in premenopausal women (p < 0.0001). Also, there was positive correlation between menopause duration and nasal mucociliary clearance time in postmenopausal women (r = 0.833, p < 0.0001). The clinicians must keep in mind that nasal mucociliary clearance time in postmenopausal women is prolonged and must follow up women in postmenopausal period more closely for respiratory tract diseases, sinonasal and middle ear infections.Öğe The Effect of Passive and Active Smoking on Nasal Mucociliary Clerarance Time(Derman Medical Publ, 2016) Ozler, Gul Soylu; Simsek, Gokce Ozel; Akbay, Ercan; Akoglu, ErtapAim: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of passive and active smoking on NMC by comparing the results of age and sex matched healthy individuals, passive and active smokers. Material and Method: A total of 75 subjects met the criteria and were divided into three groups: control group (nonsmokers, group 1, n = 25), passive smokers group(group 2, n = 25), active smokers group (group 3, n = 25). NMC of these subjects were measured and compared. Moreover, the amount of cigarette consumption of active smokers group were calculated as package to year and the correlation between NMC and the amount of cigarette consumption. in active smokers group were evaluated. Results: The mean NMC in passive smokers group and active smokers group were significantly longer than the control group (p= 0,0001) The comparison of NMC values between the passive smokers group and the active smokers group revealed no statistically significant differences (p >= 0,05). There was positive correlation between the increase in NMC and amount of cigarette consumption in the active smokers group (p= 0,0001, r= 0.433). Discussion: Both active and passive smoking prolonged nasal mucociliary clearance time when they were compared with healthy controls. Tobacco exposure is associated diseases such as asthma, chronic rhinosinusitis, and lower airway infections. It may be related to the direct effect of prolonged NMC.Öğe The effect of width of facial canal in patients with idiopathic peripheral facial paralysis on the development of paralysis(Springer, 2015) Eksi, Guldem; Akbay, Ercan; Bayarogullari, Hanifi; Cevik, Cengiz; Yengil, Erhan; Ozler, Gul SoyluThe aim of this prospective study is to investigate whether the possible stenosis due to anatomic variations of labyrinthine segment (LS), tympanic segment (TS) and mastoid segment (MS) of the facial canal in the temporal bone is a predisposing factor in the development of paralysis. 22 patients with idiopathic peripheral facial paralysis (IPFP) were included in the study. Multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) with 64 detectors was used for temporal bone imaging of the patients. Reconstruction images in axial, coronal and sagittal planes were created in workstation computers from the captured images. The diameters and lengths of LS, TS and MS of the facial canal were measured. The mean values of LD, ND and SL of LS were 1.31 +/- A 0.39, 0.91 +/- A 0.27, 4.17 +/- A 0.48 in patient group and 1.26 +/- A 0.29, 0.95 +/- A 0.21, 4.60 +/- A 1.36 in control group, respectively. The mean values of LD, ND and SL of TS were 1.11 +/- A 0.22, 0.90 +/- A 0.14, 12.63 +/- A 1.47 in patient group and 1.17 +/- A 0.23, 0.85 +/- A 0.24, 12.10 +/- A 1.79 in control group, respectively. The mean values of LD, ND and SL of MS were 1.80 +/- A 0.30, 1.44 +/- A 0.29 vs. 14.3 +/- A 1.90 in patient group 1.74 +/- A 0.38, 1.40 +/- A 0.29, 14.15 +/- A 2.16 in control group, respectively. The measurements of the parameters of all three segments in patient group and control group were similar. Similar results between patient and control group were obtained in this study investigating the effect of stenosis in facial canal in the development of IPFP.Öğe Impairment of nasal mucociliary clearance time in wood industry workers(Springer, 2020) Ozler, Gul Soylu; Akoglu, ErtapPurpose The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of wood dust on nasal mucociliary clearance time in wood industry workers. Moreover, we aimed to find out any correlation between MPV levels and the severity and prognosis of BP. MATERIALS and METHODS: The study group consisted of 30 subjects who presented with BP and 30 control subjects with no evidence of facial nerve pathology. The evaluation of subjects included a detailed history, general physical examination, and assessment of laboratory blood parameters. RESULTS: The mean MPV and platelet distribution width (PDW) values in patients with BP were significantly higher than the control group (p=0.02, p=0.0001 respectively). The mean platelet count (PC) values in the BP group and control group were similar (p=0.169). There was positive correlation between MPV values and grade of facial paralysis (r=0.716, p=0.0001). Also, there was positive correlation between PDW values and grade of facial paralysis (r=0.376, p=0.041). In contrast, there was no correlation between MPV and PDW values and prognosis of facial paralysis (r=0.275, p=0.142; r=0.073, p=0.703 respectively). CONCLUSION: There is no previous study that has investigated the association between MPV values and BP in the literature. Higher MPV values in BP patients may be a predictor of worse severity.Öğe Increased Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio in Patients With Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss(Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2014) Ozler, Gul SoyluObjective: The aim of this study was to determine whether neutrophillymphocyte ratio (NLR) levels are elevated in patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL) compared with healthy controls. Moreover, we aimed to find out whether there is a correlation between NLR levels and the severity of hearing loss. Materials and Methods: The study group consisted of 40 subjects with ISSHL and 40 control subjects with no evidence of ear pathology. Severity of hearing loss in the ISSHL patients was classified as mild (<40 dB loss for any frequency), moderate (up to 80 dB), and severe (profound, >80 dB). Results: The mean +/- SD NLR values were 5.53 +/- 1.72 in the ISHHL patients and 2.73 +/- 0.81 in the control group. The mean NLR values in the patients with ISHHL were significantly higher than in the control group (P = 0.0001). The mean +/- SD NLR values in the patients with mild (group A), moderate (group B), and severe (group C) sensorineural hearing loss were 5.53 +/- 1.72, 5.29 +/- 1.81, and 5.82 +/- 1.72, respectively. The mean NLR values in the patients with severe sensorineural hearing loss were significantly higher than in the other groups (P = 0.0001). Nevertheless, there was no correlation between NLR values and severity of hearing loss. Conclusions: There is no previous study that investigated the association between NLR and ISSHL in the literature. High NLR values in ISSHL patients may be a predictor of other ishemic conditions such as coronary or cerebral ischemia. Thus, the otorhinolaryngologist would then refer the patient to cardiology and then neurology specialists for the appropriate examinations.Öğe Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio: A New Predictive and Prognostic Factor in Patients With Bell Palsy(Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2014) Ozler, Gul Soylu; Gunak, GuldemObjective: The aim of this study was to investigate whether neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) levels are elevated in patients with Bell palsy (BP). The mean MPV values in tinnitus group and control group were similar (p=0.522). Also, the mean PDW and PC values in tinnitus group and control group were similar (p=0.311, p=0.402). Discussion: We found that there was no significant difference in MPV values of patients with tinnitus compared to the control group. MPV values alone do not seem to play a major role in the pathogenesis of tinnitus.Öğe Silver nitrate cauterization: A treatment option for aphthous stomatitis(Churchill Livingstone, 2014) Ozler, Gul SoyluObjectives: In this study we compared silver nitrate cautery with placebo to assess the effect of silver nitrate cautery in aphthous stomatitis for pain relief and healing time. Material and methods: In this study, sixty-five patients with aphthous stomatitis were assessed. Silver nitrate sticks were used in group A (treatment group) and placebo sticks were used for group B (control group). Change in the severity of pain, change in the size of the ulcers, healing time, side effects of the procedure were assessed. Results: Although the mean value of pain scores before the procedure was similar in both of the groups, there were statistically significant differences between two groups after the procedure on the first to the seventh day. On the seventh day after the procedure, the ulcers were completely reepithelialized in 21 patients (60%) in the treatment group and in 10 patients (32%) in the placebo group. The difference was statistically significant (p < 0.01). In the treatment group, the mean healing time of ulcers, reported by these 21 patients, was 2.7 days (range 2-4) after the procedure. In the placebo group, the mean healing time of ulcers, reported by 10 patients with healed ulcers, was 5.5 days (range 4-7) after the procedure. The difference was statistically significant (p < 0.01). No side effects were recorded in either of the groups. Conclusion: In conclusion, silver nitrate cautery appears to be an effective and rapid treatment option for pain relief in aphthous stomatitis. Also this treatment shortens the healing time of ulcers. (C) 2013 European Association for Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgery. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Non smokers showed more effort than smokers (p=0.0001). 40.1% of the smokers reported that medical education didn't affect their attitude against smoking, while 19.8% stated that it affected negatively. Conclusion: In conclusion the study found a higher smoking prevalence compared to developed countries Medical school curricula need to be reframed in the context of smoking cessation counseling in order to win the war against tobacco use and addiction.Öğe Why do geriatric patients visit otorhinolaryngology?(Sage Publications Inc, 2016) Ozler, Gul Soylu; Yengil, ErhanThe number and proportion of people more than 65 years old in the population are increasing with the rise in life expectancy. This study was designed to investigate the otolarygologic needs and visits of geriatric patients. We conducted a retrospective study that included all patients >= 65 years of age who visited the otolaryngology department between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. during 1 year. Age, gender, main complaint, and clinical diagnosis were noted on a chart and analyzed. In 2012, a total of 19,875 patients attended the otolaryngology department between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., of whom 418 (2.1%) were aged >= 65 years. The most common complaints were ear and hearing disorders (24.2%), epistaxis(15.3%), balance disorders (15.1%), pharyngotonsillar pathologies (14.8%), and head and facial trauma (9.6%). This study shows that the changing patient population will change the type and frequencies of pathologies seen in general otolaryngology practices. Geriatric patients need a targeted approach to their diseases because they have special issues unique to their population.
