Öğe Genetic variation of Atlantic horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus) in the Turkish waters(Cahiers De Biologie Marine, 2009) Turan, Cemal; Ozturk, Bayram; Caliskan, Mahmut; Duzgunes, Ertug; Gurlek, Mevlut; Yaglioglu, Deniz; Hazar, DurulGeographic variations of Truchurus trachurus based on mitochondrial 16S rDNA gene from 8 locations, including the Black, Marmara, Aegean and north-eastern Mediterranean Seas, were investigated. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analyses revealed 14 different composite haplotypes for 307 individuals and diagnostic restriction sites for discriminating among populations. The distribution of haplotypic groups mostly followed the geographic origin of populations. Average haplotype diversity within populations was high (0.7311), and nucleotide diversity was low (0.0071). Mean nucleotide divergence among samples of T. trachurus was 0.00271. The highest value of pairwise inter-group nucleotide divergence was detected between the West and East Black Sea samples (0.01119), and the lowest (-0.00018) between the two North-eastern Mediterranean samples. In Monte Carlo pairwise comparisons of haplotype frequencies genetically different populations were detected. The distribution of haplotypes and the pairwise estimate of nucleotide divergence exposed high differentiation of the Black Sea (BS2) population with respect to the others. Mantel's test showed that the genetic distances between these Populations were not associated with their geographical distances (r = 0.326; P > 0.05).Öğe Morphologic structuring between populations of chub mackerel Scomber japonicus in the Black, Marmara, Aegean, and northeastern Mediterranean Seas(Springer Japan Kk, 2009) Erguden, Deniz; Ozturk, Bayram; Erdogan, Zeliha Aka; Turan, CemalMorphometric and meristic analyses of chub mackerel Scomber japonicus were used to discriminate stocks throughout the Black, Marmara, Aegean, and northeastern Mediterranean Seas. Morphometric and meristic analyses showed a similar pattern of differentiation between S. japonicus stocks and revealed a clear discreteness of two groups, northeastern Mediterranean (Antalya Bay-Iskenderun Bay) and the northern group, including the Aegean, Marmara, and Black Seas. Univariate analysis of variance showed significant differences between means of the samples for most morphometric and meristic descriptors. The contribution of each variable in distinguishing between the stocks for the first discriminant function revealed high contribution from head size measurements for morphometrics, and first and second dorsal fin rays for meristics. Plotting all specimens on the first two discriminant functions accounted for 76% of total variance for morphometric and 69% of total variance for meristic analyses, and both plots resulted in two main groupings. The overall random assignment of individuals to their original group was higher in morphometric than in meristic analysis.Öğe Morphometric and meristic variation between stocks of Bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix) in the Black, Marmara, Aegean and northeastern Mediterranean Seas(Elsevier, 2006) Turan, Cemal; Oral, Mustafa; Ozturk, Bayram; Duzgunes, ErtugThe genetic and morphological variation of Pomatomus saltatrix were studied based on morphometric and meristic analyses of samples collected throughout the Black Seas, Marmara, Aegean and eastern Mediterranean Seas. In discriminant function analysis, plotting first and second discriminant functions explained 61 and 77% of the between-group variation for morphometric and meristic analyses, respectively, and indicated existence of three morphologically differentiated groups of P saltatrix. Consistent differences in the summer and winter samples of the eastern Black Sea, the adjacent sea populations of western Black Sea, Marmara Sea and Aegean Sea, which were overlapping and northeastern Mediterranean samples were observed. The detected pattern of morphological differentiation also reflects their geographic isolation. The overall random assignment of individuals into their original population was moderate for morphometric (54%) and meristic (64%) characters. Both for morphometric and meristic analysis, the highest reclassification rate was observed for the eastern Black Sea and northeastem Mediterranean Sea samples, the most clearly isolated groups. Examination of the contribution of each morphometric and meristic character to the first and second discriminant functions revealed that the observed differences were mainly from head measurements, body depth, lateral scale and vertebrate numbers, indicating these characters to be important in the description of population characteristics. Mantel's test showed that the Mahalanobis distance between the populations both for morphometric (r = -0.282; P = 0.226) and meristic (r = 0.632; P = 0.119) were not significantly associated with their geographical distances.
