Öğe Biological responses of duckweed (Lemna minor L.) exposed to the inorganic arsenic species As(III) and As(V): Effects of concentration and duration of exposure(2010) Duman, Fatih; Ozturk, Fatma; Aydin, ZekiThe accumulation of arsenic (As) and physiological responses of Lemna minor L. under different concentration (0, 1, 4, 16 and 64 ?M) and duration (1, 2, 4 and 6 days) of two species As, NaAsO2 and Na2HAsO 4•7H2O, were studied in hydroponics. The accumulation of both As species depended on As concentration and exposure duration. The highest accumulation of As was found as 17408 and 8674 ?g g-1, for plants exposed to 64 ?M of As(III) and As(V), respectively, after 6 days. Two-way ANOVA analyses indicated that, for plants exposed to arsenite (As(III)), exposure duration had a greater effect than concentration on As accumulation. Conversely, exposure concentration had a greater effect on As accumulation in plants exposed to arsenate (As(V)). Arsenic exposure levels, approaching 16 ?M for As(III) and 64 ?M for As(V), did not significantly affect EC values. Beyond these exposure concentrations, EC values increased in a manner that depended on duration. Significant effect of As(III) on lipid peroxidation was observed at 1 ?M application whereas, this effect started to be significant after an exposure to 16 ?M As(V). For both As(III) and As(V), photosynthetic pigment levels slightly increased for the first day with respect to the control, followed by a gradual decline at higher concentrations and durations. An increase in protein content and enzyme activity was observed at moderate exposure conditions, followed by a decrease. Significant positive correlations were determined between accumulated As and ion leakage and lipid peroxidation. Negative correlations were found between accumulated As and total chlorophyll and protein content. Our results suggested that exposure duration and concentration had a strong synergetic effect on antioxidant enzyme activity. The findings of the present study may be useful when this plant is used as a phytoremediator in arsenic-polluted water. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.Öğe Congenital abnormalities of the ribs: evaluation with multidetector computed tomography(Pakistan Medical Assoc, 2017) Davran, Ramazan; Bayarogullari, Hanifi; Atci, Nesrin; Kayali, Alperen; Ozturk, Fatma; Burakgazi, GuelenObjectives: To evaluate congenital abnormalities of ribs using multidetector computed tomography. Methods: The retrospective study was conducted at Mustafa Kemal University Research Hospital, Hatay, Turkey and comprised data of patients aged 1-45 years who attended the Radiology Department for computed tomography of the thorax between January 2010 and July 2013. Multiplanar reconstructions, maximum intensity projections, and 3-dimensional images were acquired to investigate numerical and structural abnormalities of the ribs of the patients who underwent multidetector computed tomography for a variety of indications. Results: The study comprised 650 patients. Of them, 231(35.5%) were female and 419(64.5%) male. The overall mean age was 20.9 +/- 5.1 years. However, data of 90(13.8%) patients was excluded from cervical rib evaluation and of 120(18.5%) from lumbar rib evaluation as these regions were out of the section because of the positioning. Finally, 560(86.5%) patients were included in the cervical rib evaluations, and 530(81.5%) in the lumbar rib evaluations. All the 650(100%) patients were included in the thoracic rib evaluations. Numerical abnormalities were observed in cervical ribs in 19(3.6%), in thoracic ribs in 1(0.15%) and in lumbar ribs in 7(1.3%) cases. The structural abnormalities were bifid rib in 44(6.7%) and fused type in 17(2.6%) cases. Conclusion: Multidetector computed tomography enabled evaluation of the thoracic cage as a whole.Öğe Effect of Sickle Cell Anemia on Pelvic Dimensions: A Magnetic(Kowsar Publ, 2017) Atci, Nesrin; Gozukara, Ilay; Ozturk, Fatma; Burakgazi, Gulen; Kurt, Raziye Keskin; Karazincir, SinemBackground: The cesarean delivery rate tends to be higher in women with sickle cell anemia (SCA) and sickle cell trait (SCT) for various reasons. However, pelvic contracture, which may lead to cesarean sections, has never before been studied in these groups. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate magnetic resonance (MR) pelvimetry findings of women with SCA and SCT. Patients and Methods: We studied 66 women who underwent MR pelvimetry between March and June 2015 at our center. Our prospective study included 21 women with SCA, 20 women with SCT, and 25 control women. Sagittal inlet, sagittal mid-pelvis, transverse inlet, transverse mid-pelvis and transverse outlet diameters were measured on MR images. The mean diameters were compared with each other and with the control group Results: Sagittal inlet and transverse inlet were not significantly different between the groups. Also, mid-pelvic diameters for the sagittal and transvers mid-pelvis were similar between the groups. Even though the transverse outlet seems to be lesser in the SCA group compared with other groups, it was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that the pelvic roofs of women with SCA and SCT are indistinguishable from healthy women. Thereby, maternal pelvic structures that impact delivery types may not be significantly changed in SCA and SCT diseases. We believe that when making decisions about modes of delivery, these results should be taken into consideration.Öğe Prevalence and Molecular Mechanism of Macrolide and Lincosamide Resistance in Staphylococci Isolated from Subclinical Bovine Mastitis in Turkey(Japan Soc Vet Sci, 2011) Aslantas, Ozkan; Ozturk, Fatma; Ceylan, AhmetMacrolide and lincosamide (ML) resistance and the related resistance genes of staphylococci were assessed from cases of bovine subclinical mastitis. Of the 104 Staphylococcus aureus and 62 coagulase negative staphylococcus (CoNS) isolates, 26 (25%) and 12 (19.4%) were resistant to ML, respectively. While constitutive ML resistance phenotype accounted for 15.4% (16/104) of S. aureus and 8.1% (5/62) of CoNS, inducible ML resistance phenotype accounted for 2.9% (3/104) of S. aureus and 3.2% (2/62) of CoNS. Among erythromycin-resistant isolates, single or various combination of different resistance genes were detected. The results of this study showed that ML resistance was prevalent among staphylococci from subclinical bovine mastitis cases in Hatay, Turkey. Therefore, a continuous surveillance is necessary to minimise the spread of antimicrobial-resistant staphylococci.Öğe Radiological Imaging of Rare Intracranial Complications Secondary to Otitis Media and Mastoiditis(Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2017) Burakgazi, Gulen; Bayarogullari, Hanifi; Ozturk, Fatma; Arli, Cengiz; Motor, Vicdan Koksaldi; Yanmaz, Rasim; Atci, NesrinAcute otitis media used to cause fatal results because of its intracranial complications before the introduction of potent and effective antibiotics. After the introduction of antibiotics, complications have started to be observed more frequently as a result of chronic otitis media and especially in children. Because clinical findings changed and became indistinct, the diagnosis of otitis and mastoiditis has been made occasionally with imaging findings only after complications occurred. Multidetector computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are efficient and sufficient methods in the rapid diagnosis and should be immediately referred methods.Öğe Utility of intravaginal ultrasound gel for local staging of cervical carcinoma on MRI(Elsevier Science Inc, 2016) Atci, Nesrin; Ozgur, Tumay; Ozturk, Fatma; Dolapcioglu, Kenan SerdarPurpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the utility of intravaginal ultrasound gel for the staging of cervical carcinoma on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to confirm the results with pathological staging. Methods: Nine patients were included in the study. T2-weighted images were compared without and with vaginal gel (VG). Results: Five patients were evaluated as overstaged on MRI without VG. After VG, the results were compatible with the pathological stages in all patients. Conclusions: We suggest that this technique is easy, well tolerated, and effective, and it increases the accuracy rate of MRI staging in early cervical cancer. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc.
