Öğe Effects of dietary Ferula elaeochytris root powder on the growth and reproductive performance of Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica): It is not recommended in a breeder diet(2009) Canogullari, Sibel; Baylan, M.; Copur, Gulsen; Sahin, A.This study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary Ferula elaeochytris (FE) root powder on the growth and reproductive performance of Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). In the first stage of the experiment (2-5 weeks), 135 two-week old quail chicks were divided into three experimental groups, each including 45 birds: control, FE5 (5 g FE root powder per kg grower diet) and FE10 (10 g FE root powder per kg grower diet). These groups were subdivided into three replicates. Grower diet included 220 g CP and 13.0 MJ ME kg-1. In the second stage of the experiment (5-12 weeks), the quails were treated with the respective FE doses within a layer diet containing 160 g CP and 10.9 MJ kg-1. In the first stage of the experiment (growth period), addition of FE root powder to the grower diet did not affect body weight gain, feed intake or feed conversion ratio (P > 0.05). In the second stage of the experiment (reproductive period), there was no effect on age at sexual maturity, body weight of quail at 50% egg production, the first ten egg weights, mean egg weight, egg production or egg quality characteristics (P > 0.05). Even though the testis weight of male quail was increased by FE treatment in a dose-dependent manner (7.02 g, 9.72 g and 9.57 g in respective groups), fertility and hatchability were totally depressed by FE treatment. The lambs were fed individually, At the onset of each refreshing period the lambs were offered fresh feed ad libitum. Daily feed intakes, weekly live weights and carcass characteristics were recorded. Daily feed intakes per lamb per treatment were; 1.13 kg, 1.05 kg, 1.00 kg, 0.98 kg and 0.95 kg; daily gains were 193.6 g, 180.6 g, 148,6 g, 169.3 g and 146.4 g; feed conversion ratios (kg feed/kg gain) were 6.1, 6.7, 7.2, 7.2 and 7.5; hot carcass weights were 13.0 kg, 13.1 kg, 12.1 kg, 13.3 kg and 13.1 kg; dressing percentages were 42.3%, 42.4%, 39.9%, 40.2% and 41.2%; the proportion of muscle in the carcass was 52.0%, 55.2%, 55.6%, 55.8% and 54.8%; bone ratio was 20.4%, 20.3%, 21.9%, 21.1% and 20.9%; subcutaneous fat ratio was 16.9%, 14.2%, 12.9%, 12.7% and 14.0% and intramuscular fat ratio was 8.8%, 7.1%, 6.8%, 8.7% and 7.7% in FR2, FR4, FR8, FR12 and FR24 treatments, respectively. Results showed that frequent feed refreshing stimulated feed intake and daily gain without affecting carcass characteristics.Öğe Effects of propolis and pollen supplementations on growth performance and body components of Japanese quails ( Coturnix coturnixjaponica)(2009) Canogullari, Sibel; Baylan, M.; Sahinler, Nuray; Sahin, A.The present study was carried out to investigate the effects of honey bee propolis and pollen supplementation on growth performance and body components in quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). Two experiments were conducted. In the first experiment, propolis ethanolic extract (30%, PEE) was supplemented in diets at levels of 0, 5 and 10 ml PEE kg 1 while in the second experiment, pollen was supplemented in diets at four levels (0, 5, 10 and 20 g pollen kg-1). In both experiments, chicks were fed with diet containing 240 g crude protein and 3100 kcal ME per kg diet. During the experimental period, body weight, feed consumption and feed efficiency were determined weekly. At the end of the experiments, 3 female and 3 male quail from each subgroup were killed humanely to determine body components. Experimental results showed that supplementation of PEE and pollen did not significantly affect body weight gain, feed efficiency or body components (P > 0.05). It was concluded that propolis and pollen had no effect at the levels investigated on performance and body components of quail.Öğe Feeding turkey poults with starter feed and whole wheat or maize in free choice feeding system: Its effects on their performances(Asian-Australasian Association of Animal Production Societies, 2006) Erener, G.; Ocak, N.; Garipoglu, A.V.; Sahin, A.; Ozturk, E.This study was carried out to determine the effects of free choice feeding of starter feed and whole cereals on the growth of turkey poults. Two hundred-seventy poults (7-d old) were divided into 3 treatment groups each with 3 replications containing 15 males and 15 females. Control poults (C) were fed only on starter feed (280 g CP and 11.7 MJ ME/kg). Treatments for choice-fed turkey poults were offered a choice of a starter feed and wheat (120 g CP and 12.3 MJ ME/kg) for wheat selecting (WS) or maize (83 g CP and 13.9 MJ ME/kg) for maize selecting (MS) group in separate feeders. Final live weight (2,280.7 g for the C vs. 2,374.3 and 2,324.6 g for the WS and MS), daily gain (39.21 g vs. 40.87 and 39.99 g) and total feed intake (95.2 g vs. 103.2 and 97.9 g) in the WS poults were significantly higher (p<0.05) than those of the C group, but feed conversion ratio was not significantly different between the treatments. The proportional intakes of cereals vs. total feed intake were 11% in both the WS and MS group. The amount of protein intake in the C group (280 g CP/kg diet) was significantly (p<0.05) higher than that in WS and MS groups (263 and 259 g CP/kg diet, respectively) whilst the ME intake in the C group (11.7 MJ/kg diet) was significantly (p<0.05) lower than that in MS group (11.9 MJ/kg diet). Our results showed that turkey poults fed starter feed and whole wheat in a free choice feeding system have a higher efficiency in terms of daily gain, final live weight, and an economic advantage may be obtained from free choice feeding due to a reduced protein intake and feed cost.Öğe The Relationship between Serum IL-17 and IL-23 Levels, and Other Disease Activity Parameters in Patients with Behcet's Disease(Univ West Indies Faculty Medical Sciences, 2023) Kucuksahin, O.; Sahin, A.; Yildizgoren, M. T.; Turgay, M.; Kinikli, G.Objective: To investigate the relationship between disease activity and the involvement of Behcet's disease (BD) and serum levels of interleukin (IL)-17 and IL-23. Methods: Sixty patients with BD and 20 healthy control group subjects were included in this study. The patients were divided into four groups according to clinical findings as follows: entero-Behcet, mucocutaneous-Behcet, neuro-Behcet and vascular-Behcet. The serum levels of the IL-17 and IL-23 levels were evaluated using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: Of the BD patients, 15 (25%) had active disease and 45 (75%) had inactive disease. The serum levels of IL-23 and IL-17 were statistically significantly higher in the patients with BD than in the control groups (p < 0.05). A significant relationship was also observed between the disease activity, and both the erythrocyte sedimentation rate and the C-reactive protein levels (p < 0.05). The mean serum levels of IL-17 and IL-23 in patients with active disease were 0.07 0.25 pg/ml and 36.0 30.5 pg/ml, respectively. There was no statistically significant relationship between the disease activity and the serum levels of IL-17 and IL-23 (p > 0.05). There were also statistically significant relationships between the disease activity and uveitis, retinal vasculitis or superficial thrombophlebitis. Conclusion: No relationship was found between BD and serum levels of the IL-17 and the IL-23.
