Öğe The disastrousness of asylum: Syrian asylum seekers and their impact on disastrousness in the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2024) Sahin, Ali UtkuPurposeTurkey hosts the majority of Syrians who fled their country due to the Syrian Civil War that started in 2011, and Syrians mostly live in the provinces most affected by the Kahramanmara & scedil; earthquakes. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of the presence of disadvantaged population on disaster risk in Turkey, a disaster country, through the Kahramanmara & scedil; earthquakes and Syrian asylum-seekers, based on the claim that the vulnerability caused by this additional population residing in the provinces most affected by the Kahramanmara & scedil; earthquakes is a factor that will increase the disastrousness of the earthquakes.Design/methodology/approachBased on the mathematical model used in the calculation of the Human Development Index, the study comparatively calculates the vulnerability of the Turkish and Syrian populations residing in the earthquake-affected provinces by taking into account population density, gender, age, education and employment factors.FindingsThe findings of the analysis show that the vulnerability of Syrian asylum seekers in Kilis, Gaziantep and Hatay provinces is higher than the vulnerability of the Turkish population.Originality/valueThis paper shows significant findings on the effects of disadvantaged groups residing in a disaster-prone area concerning the consequences of the devastating earthquakes that occurred on February 6, 2023 in the southern region of Turkey.Öğe Syrian Asylum Seekers as Political Factors and Their Effects on Local Politics(Mehmet Akif Ersoy Univ, 2024) Borkluoglu, Levent; Sahin, Ali UtkuThe influx to Turkey amidst the 2011 Syrian civil war has significantly affected the Syrian and Turkish communities socially and economically. It can be claimed that this major Syrian existence among Turkish society, has the potential to be a factor, especially in local politics and the political choices of Turkish citizens. The study focuses on 12 provinces of Turkey where the ratio of Syrian asylum seekers to the population of the province is the highest in Turkey. The main subject of this study is the function of Syrian asylum seekers in structuring Turkey's local politics. Within this context and based on the last two local elections in Turkey, election manifests and speeches of political parties and mayoral candidates are analyzed on the axis of Syrian asylum seekers. Also, the distinctive role of the presence of Syrian asylum seekers and political discourse about them in the political choices of Turkish voters is presented argumentatively. In this study, data obtained through content analysis is analyzed within a comparative framework, and in consequence, the functions of Syrian asylum seekers as political factors in structuring local politics are evaluated.
