Degradation kinetics of some organophosphorus insecticides in Aksu river, Antalya
(Asian Journal Of Chemistry, 2008) Ozdemir, Sibel; Buyuktas, Birsen Sengul; Bardakci, Tevfik; Sanguen, Mustafa Kemal
The degradations of four organophosphorus insecticides were determined in water samples collected from the Aksu river in Antalya region in Turkey in April 2002. Water samples were spiked with an initial concentration of 50 mu g/L of pesticides chlorpyrifos, azinphos-ethyl, phorate and ethion. The effects of temperature, adsorption, biodegradation, photo degradation and volatilization to the degradation of pesticides in real Aksu river water were investigated over 8 week period. The degradation kinetics was monitored in closed bottles stored in dark at three different temperatures (T = 10, 25 and 40 degrees C) and in a system exposed to natural sunlight (at variable temperature). Aksu river water samples had been conditioned to each parameter before addition of the known amount of insecticides. For the identification of the insecticides, liquid-liquid extraction with dichloromethane followed by GC-NPD was used. Half-lives of the insecticides were determined for each parameter. It was observed that half-lives of insecticides are varying depending on the environmental conditions. It was determined that the most effective way for degradation of azinphos-ethyl and ethion is photodegradation. Biodegradation and adsorption were significantly effective on degradation of chlorpyrifos. Phorate was found to be the fastest degrading insecticide under all circumstances.

Metals (major, essential to non-essential) composition of the different tissues of three demersal fish species from Iskenderun Bay, Turkey
(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2010) Yilmaz, Ayse Bahar; Sanguen, Mustafa Kemal; Yaglioglu, Deniz; Turan, Cemal
This study was performed to investigate certain major and toxic metal concentrations in different tissues of three demersal fish species (Triglia lucerna, Lophius budegassa, Solea lascaris). Generally, skin and liver exhibited higher metal concentrations than did muscle. Sodium and arsenic concentrations were found at higher levels in muscle tissues than in livers and skin, while zinc and nickel in different organs were classified as follows: skin > liver > muscle tissues. The concentrations of trace metals in fish samples indicated that S. lascaris was more contaminated than were other fish species, followed by L. budegassa and T. lucerna. It may be concluded that consumption of these species from this region is not likely to pose a threat for human health. However, although the concentrations are below the limit values for fish muscles, a potential danger may emerge in the future, depending on domestic waste waters and industrial activities in the region. Therefore, further monitoring programmes should be conducted. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Serum levels of zinc, copper, iron, cobalt, magnesium, and selenium elements in children diagnosed with Giardia intestinalis and Enterobiosis Vermicularis in Hatay, Turkey
(Humana Press Inc, 2007) Culha, Guelnaz; Sanguen, Mustafa Kemal
The intestinal parasites are noted to be an important health problem in Turkey as similarly reported in the globe. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in total content of essential elements, namely, zinc, iron, copper, cobalt, magnesium, and selenium, in children infected with intestinal parasites aged between 6 and 12 years inhabiting in Hatay Province, Turkey. These essential elements were measured in the children/patient who was positive for intestinal parasites, Giardia intestinalis and Enterobius vermicularis. Scores were obtained from the positive study group (SG), and their age matched the healthy children control group (CG). Serological levels of zinc, iron, copper, cobalt, magnesium, and selenium were analyzed by Varian(R) Liberty Series II inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES). The mean magnesium concentrations were found to be statistically different at 95% confidence interval level between study groups. As a result of this study, selenium was found to be uncorrelated with all other elements examined; whereas, copper was observed to have statistically significant correlations with cobalt, magnesium, and zinc. In addition, cobalt-magnesium, cobalt-zinc, and magnesium-zinc metal pairs were found to have statistically significant correlations based on study findings.
