Öğe Antioxidant activities and fatty acid composition of wild grown myrtle (Myrtus communis L.) fruits(Pharmacognosy Network Worldwide, 2010) Serce, Sedat; Ercisli, Sezai; Sengul, Memnune; Gunduz, Kazim; Orhan, EmineThe fruits of eight myrtles, Myrtus communis L. accessions from the Mediterranean region of Turkey were evaluated for their antioxidant activities and fatty acid contents. The antioxidant activities of the fruit extracts were determined by using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and beta-carotene-linoleic acid assays. The fatty acid contents of fruits were determined by using gas chromatography. The methanol extracts of fruits exhibited a high level of free radical scavenging activity. There was a wide range (74.51-91.65%) of antioxidant activity among the accessions in the beta-carotene-linoleic acid assay. The amount of total phenolics (TP) was determined to be between 44.41-74.44 mu g Gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/mg, on a dry weight basis. Oleic acid was the dominant fatty acid (67.07%), followed by palmitic (10.24%), and stearic acid (8.19%), respectively. These results suggest the future utilization of myrtle fruit extracts as food additives or in chemoprevention studies.Öğe Phenotypic variation in physico-chemical properties among cactus pear fruits (Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Miller) from Turkey(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2009) Toplu, Celil; Serce, Sedat; Ercisli, Sezai; Kamiloglu, Onder; Sengul, MemnuneSeveral physico-chemical properties such as fruit weight and dimensions, skin width, external and internal fruit color, vitamin A, vitamin C, acidity, pH, soluble solid content, antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of twenty five selected promising cactus pear accessions were determined. Antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of fruits were determined by -Caroten bleaching and Folin-Ciocalteu assays. The results showed great qualitative and quantitative differences in the physico-chemical characteristics of cactus pear accessions. Vitamin A (beta carotene) and vitamin C (ascorbic acid) content of genotypes were found between 2.64 and 25.13 (g/g) and 18.04 and 37.31 mg/100 g. Antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of cactus pear genotypes were between 45.5-76.8 and 19.4-49.4 mg gallic acid equivalent per g dry weight basis. The results provide important information on how to make the best use of cactus pear genotypes investigated for different uses, which is of significance for both technological research and processing practice.Öğe Phytochemical characterization of several hawthorn (Crataegus spp.) species sampled from the Eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2012) Caliskan, Oguzhan; Gunduz, Kazim; Serce, Sedat; Toplu, Celil; Kamiloglu, Onder; Sengul, Memnune; Ercisli, SezaiBackground: We evaluated the total phenolic content, antioxidant capacity as well as antioxidant activity of five Crataegus species (A1, A2, Y1, Y2, Y4 accessions of Crataegus aronia var. aronia; B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, Y5 accessions of C. aronia var. dentata; B10 accession of C. aronia var. minuta; Y3 accession of Crataegus orientalis var. orientalis and A3 accession of Crataegus monogyna subsp. azarella). Materials and Methods: Antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of fruits were determined by -carotene bleaching and Folin-Ciocalteu assays. Antioxidant capacity was determined by using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. Results: C. monogyna subsp. azarella had the highest total phenol, antioxidant activity and antioxidant capacity of 55.2 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g dry weight (DW), 81.9 and 31.2, respectively. C. aronia var. aronia was found to have the lowest total phenolic content (35.7 mg GAE/g DW). The antioxidant activities of fruit extracts increased in the order of C. orientalis var. orientalis < C. aronia var. minuta < C. aronia var. dentata < C. aronia var. aronia < C. monogyna subsp. azarella according to -carotene/linoleic acid assay. In recent years, C. aronia var. dentata has gained importance as a commercial species in this region. B3 and B7 accessions had fruit weight more than 14 g, and considerable total phenol content, antioxidant activity and antioxidant capacity. Conclusion: This investigation shows the potential value of hawthorn fruit species as a good source of natural antioxidants and that consumption of hawthorn fruit or its products may contribute substantial amounts of antioxidants to the diet.Öğe Some selected physico-chemical characteristics of wild and cultivated blackberry fruits (Rubus fruticosus L.) from Turkey(Ars Docendi, 2009) Yilmaz, Kadir Ugurtan; Zengin, Yasar; Ercisli, Sezai; Serce, Sedat; Gunduz, Kazim; Sengul, Memnune; Asma, Bayram MuratIn this study, some selected physico-chemical properties such as fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width, total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity, TSS/acidity ratio, pH, total phenolic content, antioxidant activity and free radical scavenging capacity of 9 cultivated and 16 selected wild blackberry (Rubus fruticosus L.) genotypes grown in Turkey were investigated. The total phenolic content, antioxidant activity and free radical-scavenging capacity of blackberry cultivars and genotypes were determined by using Folin-Ciocalteu, beta-carotene bleaching and DPPH radical assays. The results showed that, average fruit weight and fruit dimensions were higher in cultivated blackberries than wild materials. However, TSS, acidity and pH values were higher in wild materials. The total phenolic contents of blackberry cultivars and wild genotypes were in a range of 584 (cv. Bartin) to 788 (cv. Chester) mg/100 g and 610 (Genotypr R2) to 1455 mg/100 g (Genotype R16), expressed as gallic acid equivalents (GAE), on afresh weight basis. Antioxidant activity of cultivated and wild growing blackberry fruits was found between 72.15 (cv. Arapaho)-89.75% (cv. Bursa 3) and 59.85 (R1)-87.42% (R10), respectively. The antioxidant activity of standard BHA was 85.07%. Different cultivars grown in same location consistently showed differences in antioxidant capacity. The results of this study outlines that the blackberry fruits tested are good sources of natural antioxidants.
