Öğe Cross-border cooperation in tourism marketing growth strategies(2005) Tosun, Cevat; Timothy, Dallen J.; Parpairis, Apostolos; MacDonald, DanAn exploratory study was conducted into Greek-Turkish cross-border cooperation in tourism marketing growth strategies. It identified several strategies to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of cooperative tourism marketing strategies between the two countries. This study also identifies several challenges to cross-border cooperation in tourism marketing in this context. It is suggested that establishing a joint cross-border tourism organization, creating sufficient financial resources, and increasing involvement of business interest groups and non-government organizations (NGOs) from both sides of the border are essential for the successful implementation of joint tourism marketing growth strategies. © 2005, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. The data were collected from 73 accommodation managers by using survey questionnaire that included 39 environmental performance indicators. Findings show that tourism accommodations have low performance on energy efficiency, water conservation, responsible waste management, communication, environmental training, the environmental awareness, necessary knowledge about and interest in the environmental protection and environmental policy. The accommodations need to have environmentally sensitive, concerned and knowledgeable managerial staff in order to preserve ecological integrity in protected areas. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Those studied had the greatest tendency toward product-oriented marketing and the least orientation toward societal marketing. The findings reveal that competency, availability of financial resources, and characteristics of the country's business environment influence the application of marketing management philosophies in organizations. A deeper analysis of the internal and external environments is thus essential to understanding the challenges in following more customer-oriented and societal considerations at a destination. This paper discusses whether marketing practices developed in Western countries can be applied in a developing country and why organizations in such countries may fail to practice these marketing practices.Öğe Shortcomings in planning approaches to tourism development in developing countries: The case of Turkey(2001) Tosun, Cevat; Timothy, Dallen J.Many developing countries have prepared plans particularly at the central level to guide tourism development, as they have recognized the tourism sector as an important source of foreign currency earning and employment. In this context, mainly aims at analyzing the shortcomings of the planning approaches to tourism development in developing countries by exemplifying the points made with special references to Turkey. There appears to be several defects in the planning approaches to tourism development. Concludes that there is the need for political stability, establishing supportive institutions and decentralization to develop and implement an appropriate contemporary tourism planning approach by taking into account destination specific conditions, and collaboration and cooperation of western governments and international agencies. © 2001, MCB UP LimitedÖğe Tourism growth, national development and regional inequality in Turkey(2003) Tosun, Cevat; Timothy, Dallen J.; Öztürk, YükselThe introduction of international tourism as an economic growth strategy in Turkey is relatively recent, and Turkey has experienced rapid tourism growth in terms of volume and value. Despite the significant progress in these respects, tourism has contributed little to development. Instead, it has increased the rate of economic growth at the expense of equality among regions and classes. This paper examines the impacts of intensive coastal tourism growth on the development of rural regions in particular and national development in general. It concludes that spatial concentrations of mass tourism investment induced by tourism incentive policies in relatively developed coastal regions have increased disparities among regions and classes. © 2003, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
