Öğe Being a nurse in Turkey's disaster: A phenomenological study on post-earthquake experiences(Elsevier, 2024) Dogan, Sevgi Deniz; Tosunoz, Ipek Kose; Kaya, Pinar; Yurtseven, Seyma; Aydinli, AyseThis study aimed to reveal the experiences of nurses who work in cities affected by earthquakes and provide care for earthquake survivors. The study is qualitative research with a phenomenological design. The study was conducted with 30 nurses, aged between 22 and 56 years old, who worked in public hospitals and provided care to earthquake victims in the areas affected by the earthquake centered in Kahramanmaras. The obtained qualitative data were analyzed by content analysis method. The participating nurses in the study defined the nursing profession after the earthquake as selflessness, obligation, tiredness, and satisfaction. Additionally, the nurses reported experiencing some managerial and personal difficulties in the delivery of care services during the acute phase after the earthquake. The findings of this study can serve as a guide for developing current nursing care strategies during disasters and rapidly resolving issues that may arise in post-disaster nursing care. It is recommended to enhance existing Hospital Disaster Plans, provide in-service training to nurses, and make plans to rapidly increase personnel to cope with the expected increase in post-disaster care burden.Öğe Being a nurse in Turkey's disaster: A phenomenological study on post-earthquake experiences (vol 103, 104346, 2024)(Elsevier, 2024) An, Sevgi Deniz Dog; Tosunoz, Ipek Kose; Kaya, Pinar; Yurtseven, Seyma; Aydinli, Ayse[Abstract Not Available]Öğe Career future perceptions and attitudes towards migration of nursing students: A cross-sectional multicenter study(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2022) Tosunoz, Ipek Kose; Nazik, EvsenBackground: It is important to understand the perceptions of career plans and attitudes towards migration of nursing students so that it can be possible to review the education programs in this direction and plan an effective health workforce.Aim: To determine nursing students' career future perceptions and attitudes towards migration.Design: Descriptive and cross-sectional online survey. Methods: The study was completed with 3053 students from 52 universities located in seven different regions of Turkey who agreed to participate in the study. The data were collected using the Student Information Form, Attitude Scale for Brain Drain (ASBD) and Career Futures Inventory (CFI) with an online questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, one-way analysis of variance and correlation were used to analyze the data.Results: Mean age of the students was 20.29 +/- 2.28 and most were females. Students' mean total scores of ASBD, and CFI were 56.64 +/- 12.22 and 91.32 +/- 11.71 respectively. There was a statistically significant difference between the total mean scores of ASBD and the region of the university where the students studied, gender, being multilingual, desire to work abroad after graduation and experience of participating in student exchange programs and between the total mean scores of CFI and experience of participating in an exchange program. There was a positive and statistically significant relationship between ASBD and CFI total mean scores (p < 0.05).Conclusion: Nursing students' attitudes towards migration and perceptions of career future were positive and there was a positive relationship between attitudes towards migration and perceptions of career future.Öğe The effect of brochure-assisted education given before septorhinoplasty on surgical fear and anxiety: A randomized controlled trial(Wiley, 2024) Dogan, Sevgi Deniz; Tosunoz, Ipek Kose; Gulmez, Mehmet IhsanThis study is a randomized controlled interventional study aimed to determine the effect of preoperative brochure-assisted education on surgical fear and anxiety in patients scheduled for septorhinoplasty surgery. The study was conducted between May 2022 and February 2023 in the Otorhinolaryngology services and clinics of a training and research hospital in the southern region of Turkey. The study included 61 patients, with 29 in the education group and 32 in the control group. All patients received routine nursing care before surgery, with the education group receiving additional education through an informative brochure. The data were collected using the Personal Information Form, Surgical Fear Questionnaire, and Surgical Anxiety Questionnaire. There was no significant difference in the mean scores of surgical fear between the groups on the morning of the surgery (p > 0.05). However, a significant difference was found in the mean scores of surgical anxiety between the groups (p < 0.05). In conclusion, patients in the education group who received preoperative brochure-assisted education had lower anxiety compared with the control group.Öğe The effect of crossword puzzles on nursing students' learning of concepts related to pain management course: A randomized controlled trial(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2023) Tosunoz, Ipek Kose; Dogan, Sevgi DenizBackground: Nursing students encounter various terms and concepts during their undergraduate education. Repeating and reinforcing these terms and concepts is challenging. Active learning strategies are recommended to enhance students' effectiveness, productivity and interest in the learning process in undergraduate education.Aim: This study aims to investigate the effect of crossword puzzles on nursing students' learning success and knowledge retention of the concepts related to the pain management course.Design: The study was conducted as a randomized controlled trial.Settings: The study was conducted in the nursing department of a state university in the southern region of Turkey.Participants: The study involved 72 s-year nursing students who were enrolled in the Pain Management course.Methods: Data were collected using a Personal Information Form and three different Pain Management Knowledge Tests. While the control group received only the standard lecture technique as a traditional method, the experimental group was exposed to crossword puzzles as an active learning method for three lesson hours following the standard lecture technique. Research data were collected between November and December 2022 in the classroom. Descriptive statistics, the Independent Samples t-test, Repeated Measures ANOVA test and Pearson's chi-squared test were employed for data analysis.Results: There was no significant difference between the pre-test and first post-test mean scores of both groups (p > 0.05). However, the second post-test scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group (p < 0.05).Conclusion: The use of crossword puzzles positively affected nursing students' knowledge levels regarding concepts related to the pain management course.Öğe Effects of aromatherapy on pain and anxiety in burn patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis(Elsevier Science Inc, 2023) Dogan, Sevgi Deniz; Tosunoz, Ipek KoseObjectives: Pain and anxiety are problems that are common in burn patients and negatively affect their quality of life. Aromatherapy is one of the methods nurses use to relieve pain and anxiety. Evidence is needed for the effect of aromatherapy on pain and anxiety in burn patients. This systematic review and meta-analysis study aims to determine the effects of aromatherapy on pain and anxiety in burn patients.Methods: Reviews were done through Google Scholar, PubMed, EBSCO (Medline, CINAHL), Embase (OVID) Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and Scopus databases using keywords. All studies included in the review were ran-domized controlled trials (RCTs) conducted between 2012 and 2022 that assessed the efficacy of any type of aromatherapy as a treatment for burn-related pain and anxiety. Study selection and data extraction were per-formed by two independent reviewers. In assessing the quality of research IJB Critical Appraisal Checklist for randomized controlled trials, the risk of bias (ROB) in the trials included in the review was assessed using the Cochrane ROB assessment tool. The data were synthesized by meta-analysis.Results: Seven randomized controlled experimental studies published in 2016-2022 were included in the study. The total sample size of the studies is 662. According to the combined results of these studies, pain and anxiety scores in both aromatherapy (massage and inhalation) groups were lower than in the control group.Conclusion: This study showed that aromatherapy with some herbs is effective in reducing pain and anxiety in burn patients. However, higher quality RCTs are needed to establish guidelines on the use of aromatherapy safely.Öğe Perception and readiness for inter-professional education of health discipline students: A cross-sectional study(Churchill Livingstone, 2022) Kara, Pinar; Yikar, Seda Karacay; Cercer, Zehra; Tosunoz, Ipek Kose; Arslan, Sevban; Nazik, EvsenBackground: Interprofessional education (IPE) is a concept focusing on the improvement of a good teamwork environment bringing professionals from diffferent professions together to obtain high-quality health care and improve health outcomes. Determining health discipline students' IPE perceptions and readiness is important to develop, implement and maintain effective IPE programs. Objectives: This study aims to determine perception and readiness for interprofessional education of health discipline students. Design: This study utilized a descriptive and cross-sectional design. Settings: A public university in Turkey. The study was conducted with students enrolled in Faculty of Health Sciences, Medical Faculty, Faculty of Dentistry, or Vocational School of Health Services. Participants: The participants included 646 health discipline students who were enrolled in nursing, midwifery, medical, dentistry, medical imaging technology, first and emergency aid, and elderly care departments. Methods: Data were collected through the Data Collection Form, the Interdisciplinary Education Perception Scale (IEPS-TR) and the Readiness for Inter-professional Learning Scale (RIPLS). Results: The participants' IEPS-TR and RIPLS total mean scores were found 65.81 +/- 19.86 and 67.90 +/- 13.53, respectively. The IEPS-TR and RIPLS mean scores and the variables such as choosing the department willingly and being satisfied with the department indicated a statistically significant correlation (p < 0.05). In addition, RIPLS mean scores and the variables such as age, and willingness to take classes with other healthcare students indicated a statistically significant correlation (p < 0.05). However, no statistically significant correlation was found between the IEPS-TR and RIPLS total mean scores and department-related variables (p > 0.05). The participants' IEPS-TR and RIPLS mean scores demonstrated a positive and significant relationship (r = 0.314, p < 0.001). Conclusions: This study showed that health discipline students had a high level of perception of interdisciplinary education and were ready for interprofessional education. The study also demonstrated that students' perception of interdisciplinary education increased with the increase in their readiness for this education.Öğe Perceptions of interdisciplinary education and readiness for inter-professional education of nursing students: A sample of three different cities in Turkey(Churchill Livingstone, 2021) Tosunoz, Ipek Kose; Yikar, Seda Karacay; Cercer, Zehra; Kara, Pinar; Arslan, Sevban; Nazik, EvsenBackground: In recent years, interprofessional education has been described as an opportunity for all healthcare professionals to enhance nursing quality by learning together and about one another. Determining perceptions and readiness of nurses regarding interprofessional education is important for effective education planning. Objectives: The aim of the study is to determine readiness for interprofessional learning and perceptions of interdisciplinary education of nursing students. Design: Descriptive and cross-sectional study. Settings: Nursing departments of public universities, in three different cities in Turkey. Methods: This study was conducted with 738 thirdand fourth-year nursing students. The data of the study was collected using Student Information Form, Readiness for Inter-professional Learning Scale (RIPLS), and Interdisciplinary Education Perception Scale (IEPS). The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, Student's t-test, Kruskal-Wallis test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and correlation. Results: Mean age of the students was 21.56 +/- 1.48, and the majority (72.9%) were women. Of the students, 58.9% chose their profession willingly, 56% chose the department as their first choice, 41.2% wanted to receive education with other healthcare students, and 84% reported having prior teamwork experience. Students' mean total scores of RIPLS and IEPS were respectively 69.78 +/- 11.32 and 69.19 +/- 16.62. There was a statistically significant difference between RIPLS mean scores and choosing the occupation willingly, order of choice, being satisfied with the choice of department, and willingness to study with other healthcare students, and between IEPS mean scores and choosing the occupation willingly, order of choice and being satisfied with the department choice (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Nursing students in three different cities had good readiness levels for interprofessional education and perception levels of interdisciplinary education, and differed according to certain demographical qualities. In addition, there was a positive relationship between readiness of inter-professional education, and perceptions of the students.Öğe The relationship between ethnocentrism and xenophobia level and predictors: A descriptive and correlational study of nurses working in two cities where refugees live intensively in Turkey(Wiley, 2024) Tosunoz, Ipek Kose; Copur, Ebru OzturkDetermining the ethnocentrism and xenophobia levels of nurses contributes to nurses' awareness regarding their attitudes on the issue and providing quality care. This descriptive and correlational study aimed to determine the relationship between ethnocentrism and xenophobia levels of nurses working in hospitals located in two different border regions where refugees live intensively in Turkey. The study was conducted with 386 nurses who were working in two different hospitals located in two cities in the south of Turkey. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form, Ethnocentrism Scale, and Xenophobia Scale. About half of the nurses did not want to care for foreign patients. There was a positive and statistically significant relationship between mean scores of the Ethnocentrism Scale and the Xenophobia Scale (p < 0.05). The regression analysis indicated that the level of ethnocentrism explains the level of xenophobia by 9%. Nurses had a high level of xenophobia and moderate ethnocentric attitudes. The level of xenophobia increased as the ethnocentrism level of nurses increased. It is recommended to conduct further studies to determine different predictors of xenophobia among nurses.Öğe The relationship between nursing students' pain beliefs and fear of pain: A descriptive and correlational study(Elsevier Science Inc, 2024) Tosunoz, Ipek Kose; Dogan, Sevgi DenizBackground: Future nurses' beliefs and attitudes regarding pain can affect their approach to patients with pain and pain management. Aim: This study aimed to determine the relationship between nursing students' pain beliefs and their fear of pain. Methods: A descriptive and correlational study included 312 nursing students. The Student Information Form, Pain Beliefs Scale, and Fear of Pain Scale -III were used to collect data. Results: The students' mean scores of the Fear of Pain Scale -III, Organic Beliefs, and Psychologic Beliefs subcategories were 92.21 +/- 17.73, 3.47 +/- 0.67, and 2.67 +/- 1.03, respectively. There was a positive relationship between the Fear of Pain Scale -III and psychological and organic beliefs mean scores (p < 0.05). A one -unit increase in the organic beliefs variable increases the probability of fear of pain by 0.36 times. Conclusions: The nursing students' organic beliefs and fear of pain were moderate and their psychological beliefs were low. Nurse educators can integrate different teaching strategies to overcome students' misconceptions about pain and fears of pain into their curriculum.
