    Evaluation of the levels of homocysteine, troponin I, and nitric oxide in lambs with subclinical white muscle disease

    White muscle disease (WMD) or Nutritional myodegeneration disease (NMD) is a degenerative disease of the cardiac and skeletal muscles. The level of serum activity of Plasma homocysteine (Hcy), cardiac troponin I (cTn I), Nitric oxide (NO) were investigated in lambs with subclinical NMD in this study. Ten healthy lambs and twenty lambs with subclinical NMD were used in this study. The blood samples were firstly taken at the onset of the disease and then 3 and 10 days after treatment in NMD, and taken once control group. The values of serum activity of creatin kinase (CK), aspartate aminotranferase (AST), alanine aminotranferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were measured with autoanalyzer. Plasma concentration of Hcy, serum cTn I, and levels of NO were determined with ELISA method and value of activity erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) was measured with spectrophotometer. Before treatment, values of plasma Hcy, serum NO, cTn I, AST, ALT, ALP, CK, and LDH in lambs with NMD were higher than those of healthy ones (P<0.001), while GSH-Px activity of lambs with NMD are lower than those of healthy (P<0.001). After ten days of treatment, there were no significant diff erences between treated lambs with NMD and healthy lambs. Nutritional myodegeneration in lambs is associated with increased levels of Hcy, cTn I, and NO. Increased levels of Hcy, cTn I, and NO may be a result of selenium deficiency causing myocardial disorder in NMD lambs.

    Immunostimulatory effects of Aloe vera and ?-Glucan on cellular and humoral immune responses following vaccination with polyvalent vaccines in dogs

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Aloe vera and &#946;-Glucan on lymphocyte subsets, haematological parameters and immunglobulin concentrations following vaccination in dogs. For this purpose, totally 20 street dogs were used. The animals were allocated into five groups. Group 1 consisted of only polyvalent vaccine applied dogs. Group 2 and 3 were only Aloe vera and &#946;-Glucan applied dogs, respectively. Group 4 and 5 were consisted of polyvalent vaccine in addition to Aloe vera and &#946;-Glucan applied dogs, respectively. Blood samples were collected before vaccination and after vaccination (AV). Although platelet (PLT) counts in group 1 decreased AV, in all other groups (group 2, 3, 4, 5) it increased. White blood cell (WBC) and peripheral blood mononuclear lymphocyte (PBML) counts (in all groups), peripheral blood polymorphonuclear lymphocyte (PBPL) counts (group 1, 2, 4, 5), neutrophil (group 1, 4, 5), monocyte (group 2, 3, 5), packed cell volume (PCV) ratios (group 2 and 3) and haemoglobin (HGB) concentrations (group 3) increased AV. But, lymphocyte ratios in all groups did not change AV. CD8 T lymphocyte ratios in all groups increased at $7^{th}$ and $14^{th}$ days AV. Although CD3 T lymphocyte ratios in group 1 increased at $7^{th}$ day AV, CD4 T and B lymphocytes ratios did not change AV period. But, both CD3 and CD4 T lymphocytes ratios in all other groups increased at $7^{th}$ and $14^{th}$ days AV. Moreover, B lymphocytes ratios in all groups except for group 1 increased AV. On the other hand, B lymphocytes ratios in group 2 and 3 increased only $7^{th}$ day AV, while this increase in group 4 and 5 were present on both $7^{th}$ and $14^{th}$ days AV. Serum IgM concentrations in group 1 increased only $7^{th}$ day AV, whereas its levels did not change in group 2 and 3. Serum IgG concentrations in group 1, 2 and 3 increased only $14^{th}$ day AV. But, serum IgM and IgG concentrations in group 4 and 5 increased at $7^{th}$ and $14^{th}$ days AV. Administration of Aloe vera and &#946;-Glucan after vaccination in dogs may stimulate both cellular and humoral immun responses. Additionally, it might have restorative effect on PLT counts.

    Relation of some biochemical parameters in Van (Turkey) cats with sex, age, eye colour and hair length

    Amaç: Van kedileri, doğu Türkiye kaynaklıdır ve ulusal kültürel varlıkların bir parçasıdır. Van kedilerinin en belirgin özelliği, gözlerinin renkleridir (diskromatopsi). Bu çalışmanın amacı, Van kedilerinde plazma aspartat aminotransferaz, alanin aminotransferaz aktiviteleri, total protein, albümin, glikoz, trigliserit, LDL kolesterol, HDL kolestrol, kan üre / nitrojen ve kreatinin düzeylerini saptamak ve bu parametrelerin cinsiyet, yaş, göz rengi ve tüy uzunluğu ile ilişkisini araştırmaktır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu çalışmada, standart kedi yemi ile beslenen, sağlıklı, 47 adet Van kedisi (Van Kedi Evi, Yuzuncu Yil Üniversitesi, Van) kan plazması kullanıldı. Kediler, cinsiyet (dişierkek), yaş (1-2; 3-4; 5'in üzerinde), göz rengi (amber-amber, amber-mavi, mavi-amber, mavi-mavi, soldan sağa açıklanan gözler) ve tüy uzunluğu (kısa; uzun) temel alınarak gruplara ayrıldı. Plazma biyokimyasal parametreleri ticari kitlerle kolorimetrik olarak spektrofotometre ile belirlendi.Bulgular: Cinsiyete ilişkin olarak parametreler arasında fark yoktu. Kısa tüylü kedilerde uzun tüylü kedilere göre albumin düzeyleri daha yüksekti (p<0.05). Göz rengi açısından değerlendirildiğinde, mavi-mavi gözlü kedi plazma glikoz düzeyleri diğer göz rengi gruplarına göre çok daha yüksekti (p<0.001). Yaş gruplarında, 1-2 yaşındaki kedilerde kreatinin düzeyleri diğer yaş gruplarına göre daha düşüktü (p<0.05)Öneri: Sonuçlarımız, Van kedilerinin plazma biyokimyasal parametrelerinin bazılarının göz rengi, yaş ve tüy uzunluğu ile ilişkili olabileceğini göstermiştir. Ayrıca Van kedilerinden elde edilen bu biyokimyasal bulguların, klinik tanıda yarar sağlayacağı düşünülmektedir.
