Öğe Ala-9Val polymorphism of Mn-SOD gene in sickle cell anemia(Funpec-Editora, 2011) Sogut, S.; Yonden, Z.; Kaya, H.; Oktar, S.; Tutanc, M.; Yilmaz, H. R.; Yigit, A.Oxidative stress may be contributory to the pathophysiology of the abnormalities that underlie the clinical course of sickle cell anemia. We looked for a possible genetic association between the functional polymorphism Ala-9Val in the human Mn-SOD gene and sickle cell anemia. One hundred and twenty-seven patients with sickle cell anemia and 127 healthy controls were recruited into the study. Alanine versus valine polymorphism in the signal peptide of the Mn-SOD gene was evaluated using a primer pair to amplify a 107-bp fragment followed by digestion with the restriction enzyme NgoMIV. In the sickle cell anemia patients, the frequency of Val/Val genotype was approximately 1.4-fold lower and that of Ala/Val was 1.3-fold higher compared to the controls. No significant difference in genotype frequencies was found between patients and controls (chi(2) = 4.561, d.f. = 2, P = 0.101). The Val-9 was the most common allele in patient and healthy subjects. No significant difference in allele frequencies was found between patients and controls (chi(2) = 1.496, d.f. = 1, P = 0.221). We conclude that the Mn-SOD gene polymorphism is not associated with sickle cell anemia.Öğe Life table of Delphastus catalinae (Horn) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) on cotton whitefly, Bemisla tabaci (Genn.) (Hornoptera: Aleyrodidae) as prey(Eugen Ulmer Gmbh Co, 2007) Kutuk, H.; Yigit, A.Developmental time, longevity and fecundity of Delphastus catalincie (Horn), a predator of Bemisia tabaci (Genn.), were evaluated under laboratory conditions. Developmental time from egg to adult was 22.3, 15.57 and 18.41 days at 25, 30 degrees C and at fluctuating temperatures of 25/35 degrees C (12/12 h), respectively. It was also found that temperatures above 35 degrees C were lethal, since all eggs were killed. The female adult's longevity and reproduction differed with temperatures. Mean adult longevities were 105.25, 40.2 and 42.1 days, and total fecundities were 213.72, 118.94, and 117.93 eggs/female at 25, 30 degrees C and at fluctuating temperatures of 25/35 degrees C, respectively. Additionally, life tables were constructed from data obtained to compare the effects of different temperatures. The highest reproductive rate was 88.93 at 25 degrees C. In contrast, at 30 degrees C the highest intrinsic rate of increase and the shortest generation time were 0.127 and 28.14 days, respectively. The results indicate that the optimum temperature for mass rearing of D. catalinae ranges from 25 degrees C to 30 degrees C.Öğe TRANSMISSION OF THE FIG MOSAIC AGENT BY THE ERIOPHYD MITE ACERIA FICUS COTTE (ACARI: ERIOPHYIDAE)(Springer, 2009) Caglayan, K.; Medina, V.; Yigit, A.; Kaya, K.; Gazel, M.; Serce, C.
