Öğe Being a neighbor to Syria: A retrospective analysis of patients brought to our clinic for cranial gunshot wounds in the Syrian civil war(Elsevier Science Bv, 2014) Aras, M.; Altas, M.; Yilmaz, A.; Serarslan, Y.; Yilmaz, N.; Yengil, Erhan; Urfali, B.Objective: Toward the end of 2010, the Arab spring, the waves of revolutionary demonstrations and protests influenced also Syria, where violent clashes turned into a civil war. Hundreds of thousands of people became refugees. The use of excessive force unfortunately culminated in numerous deaths and injuries in many cities. Being the closest city to Aleppo, Damascus and Horns, the biggest cities of Syria, Antioch/Hatay has been the city where initial emergency treatments were performed. For this reason, we examined and retrospectively analyzed the medical records of the patients treated in the clinics of our hospital due to cranial gunshot wounds during the war. Material and methods: The medical records of 186 patients who were injured in the Syrian War and brought to, followed up and treated in the Neurosurgery Clinic of Mustafa Kemal University, Faculty of Medicine in Hatay, a Turkish city on the Syrian border, between April 2011 and June 2013. Results: A total of 186 patients were evaluated in a period of more than 2 years. Of all 91.4% of the patients were adults (male/female: 152/18) and 8.6% of them were pediatric patients (male/female: 14/2). The average age of the patients was 31 years, with an age range of between 2 months and 67 years. According to Glasgow coma score (GCS) of the patients at the time of admission, GCS was 3 in 32 patients (17.2%), between 4 and 7 in 70 patients (37.6%), and between 8 and 15 in 84 patients (45.1%). We observed that the patients with GCS of 4-7 had a significantly lower mortality among the 56 patients treated surgically compared with the 14 patients treated medically. Discussion: Cranial gunshot wounds are responsible for high mortality and morbidity. A multiplicity of factors plays a role on morbidity and mortality. These are the duration of transport, the injury pattern, the velocities of the weapons used, and the Glasgow Coma Scales of the patients at the time of admission. Conclusion: The authors recommend that the patients with cranial gunshot wounds who has GCS of 4-7 should be aggressively treated including surgery as well. We do not recommend surgical treatment for patients with GCS of 3. All our experiences show that treatment of gunshot wounds will continue to be a matter of debate, about which there is more to learn. The data presented in this study will once again demonstrate the seriousness of the event, and will, perhaps, contribute to the peace negotiations to end the war. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. The determination of appropriate breed in a specific feeding condition is very important to obtain high quality products, and also profitable production. There has been an increased interest to fatty acid composition of meat in recent years, because saturated fatty acid (SFA) and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) are considered major risk factors for coronary heart diseases. Aim - The aim of the study was to determine the finishing performance and meat fatty acid composition under intensive production system of lambs from sheep breeds widespread in Marmara Region of Turkey. Materials and methods - After weaning at 85-day, 6 lambs from Imroz and 10 lambs from each of Kivircik, Chios, Ramlic and Turkish Merino breeds were finished for 56-day after the 1-week adaptation period to diet. Longissimus dorsi muscle was used to assess meat fatty acid composition. Results - Imroz and Chios lambs had lower initial and final weights, and average daily gain (ADG) than Kivircik, Ramlic and Turkish Merino lambs (P < 0.001). Moreover, Imroz lambs had lower ADG than Chios lambs. Kivircik, Ramlic and Turkish Merino lambs had similar finishing performance. Differences between breeds for proportions of individual fatty acids other than lauric acid were not significant (P > 0.05). Lauric acid proportion was higher in Ramlic lambs than Kivircik and Chios lambs (P < 0.05). The effect of breed on SSFA, SMUFA, SPUFA, Sn-6 proportions and SPUFA/SSFA ratio were not significant (P > 0.05), whereas meat of Ramlic lambs had higher Sn-3 proportion than that of Imroz lambs (P < 0.05). Conclusion - No significant breed influence was observed for meat fatty acids, which are important in terms of cardio-vascular health. However, Kivircik, Ramlic and Turkish Merino lambs might be considered to have a greater potential for meat production, because of higher final weight and ADG in lambs of these breeds than Imroz and Chios lambs.Öğe Calvarial metastasis as clinic presentation of renal cell carcinoma: A case report(Springer, 2017) Ceylan, E. Cengiz; Dogan, E.; Secinti, I. E.; Gursoy, D.; Ozgur, T.; Hakverdi, S.; Yilmaz, A.[Abstract Not Available]Öğe The effects of mobile phones on apoptosis in cerebral tissue: an experimental study on rats(Verduci Publisher, 2014) Yilmaz, A.; Yilmaz, N.; Serarslan, Y.; Aras, M.; Altas, M.; Ozgur, T.; Sefil, F.INTRODUCTION: The concern about mobile phone effects is increasing as the number of users increasing too. Different studies have different results, so this topic is still open to discussion. Aim of this report was to investigate the effects of the mobile phones on the Bcl-2 gene and p53 proteins in rat brains. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the study group of 10 rats; mobile phones that spread EMW at a frequency between 1900-2100 MHz and Specific Absorption Rate range between 0.005 W/kg and 0.288 W/kg (Dialing mode), 0.004 W/kg and 0.029 W/kg (Calling mode) were attached to rat ears for simulating usage in daily life for 7 times a day during 5 minutes (3 seconds dialing mode, 4 minutes and 47 seconds of calling mode) for a four week period. Sham group (n=10) rats were only immobilized without EMW exposure. Another group of rats (n=10) were counted as control without any application. immunohistopathological examination was performed for p53 and Bcl-2 expression. RESULTS: Immunohistopathological examinations revealed that the samples in the study group had more p53 and Bcl-2 positive stained cells and they were stained denser. In both evaluations, these differences between the study and control group were found statistically significant (p < 0.003); In Bcl-2 evaluation statistically significant difference was found between study and sham group to (p < 0.005); however, the p53 evaluation between the study and the sham group did not show any statistically significant difference (p > 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: Our results showed that the electro-magnetic waves emitted by the mobile phones may have effect on apoptosis. Besides, obtained data revealed that more realistic application of mobile phones during experiments is more important as expected.Öğe Gemistocytic astrocytoma with granulomatous inflammation(Springer, 2012) Ipci, O.; Dogan, E. Atik; Ozgur, T.; Gokce, H.; Yilmaz, N.; Yilmaz, A.[Abstract Not Available]Öğe Oxidase activity of ceruloplasmin and some acute phase reactant and trace element concentrations in serum of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia(Scottish Medical Journal, 2007) Gundogdu, M.; Kaya, H.; Gulcin, I.; Erdem, F.; Cayir, K.; Keles, M.; Yilmaz, A.In the present study, we aimed to investigate the parameters in serum of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and correlate with the cancer stage. The serum concentrations of ceruloplasmin, a-1-acid glycoprotein, albuminumin, transferrin, copper, zinc, manganese, and ceruloplasmin oxidase activity were measured, and compared with those from a healthy control group. The serum from 34 patients with CLL were extracted before chemotherapy. Serum transferrin, allbuminumin and Zinc concentrations were lower in patients with CLL while serum a-1-acid glycoprotein, ceruloplasmin, copper concentrations, and ceruloplasmin oxidase activity were higher in CLL patients when compared with the control group. Although serum manganese concentration was lower in CLL groups than in the control group, the difference was not statistically significant. Serum transferrin concentration was lower in the early stage group compared with the advanced stage. Serum ceruloplasmin level positively correlated with serum ceruloplasmin oxidase activity in patients from the early stage group. Serum ceruloplasmin level positively correlated with serum ceruloplasmin oxidase activity in patients with advanced stage. In conclusion, increased serum ceruloplasmin oxidase activity, ceruloplasmin, a-1-acid glycoprotein, copper levels and decreased transferrin and albuminumin, unchanged manganese levels are associated with CLL and appear to be a consequence of the disease itself.
