Özet
The aim of the present research was to investigate learning styles of the high school students in terms of playing sports or not playing sports. The study also investigated whether or not learning styles of the students differed according to gender, age and sport branches of those who played sports. The research group was consisted of 910 students (425 students who played sports and 485 students who did not play sports) who attended to 11 high schools that belonged to National Education Directorate of Hatay Province during the second half of the 2010-2011 academic year. The group of those playing sports was made up by the students who represented their schools and participated in sportive competitions whereas the group of those not playing sports was composed of the students who studied at the same school but in different grades and who did not play any sports actively. The model of the research was survey model. As the data collection tools, Personal Information Form developed by the researcher and Kolb Learning Styles Inventory developed by Kolb and adapted into Turkish by Askar and Akkoyunlu were used. For the analyses of the data, frequency and percentages were used while chi-square statistical method was used for the correlations between variables. The accepted level of significance for all analyses was p < 0.05. As the result of the study, it was found out that those playing sports possessed assimilator learning style most (35.5%) and it was followed by diverger learning style (30.6%), converger learning style (20.7%) and accommodator learning style (13.2%); respectively. As for those not playing sports, they also possessed assimilator learning style most (36.5%) and it was followed by diverger learning style (32.4%), converger learning style (20.8%) and accommodator learning style (10.3%); respectively. It was seen that there was no difference in students' learning styles in terms of playing sports or not playing sports. Besides, it was noted that there was not any significant difference between learning styles of the students who played sports and who did not and gender and age variables, and those who played individual sports and who played team sports showed similar tendencies in learning styles (p > 0.05). © Sila Science.
