Abstract

In this study, fruit quality characteristics of some pomegranate cultivars ('Hicaz', 'Katirbaşi', 'Çekirdeksiz' and 'Kara Mehmet') were determined in Dörtyol, Hatay, Turkey. Several pomological characteristics of the cultivars were determined from the 2002 until the 2006 growing season. Averaged over the 4 years, pomegranate cultivars had a range of 241.1-319.8 g for fruit weight, 67.5-78.7 mm fruit height, 75.2-85.3 mm fruit width, 2.9-4.0 mm peel thickness and 57.7-64.1% in percent arils. In addition, the total soluble solid content was between 14.3 and 16.6%, pH between 2.97 and 3.20, acidity between 0.39 and 1.59%. Pomegranate cultivars had a green or yellow background color, red or pink peel coverage and aril color, and soft, semi-hard and hard seeds. According to the data obtained, 'Hicaz' and 'Katirbaşi' were found to be promising for cultivation under the ecological conditions in Dörtyol.
