Halophytes are salt-tolerant plants with a potential for use as livestock fodder in the future. Among these plants that can grow on saline habitats as well as under extreme climatic conditions are the species of the genera Salsola and Suaeda, a promising animal feed source. The species of these genera are of significant importance, and many taxa from these genera can be used as animal fodder in semi-arid to arid areas of different regions in the world. The information on the morphological features, together with ecological and ecophysiological characteristics, as well as nutritional features of the genera Salsola and Suaeda have been reviewed. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021.
