Özet
The present study provides some initial information about population structure and abundance of the giant red shrimp, Aristaeomorpha foliacea from deep waters of the northeastern Mediterranean Sea. This kind of data has not been reported from that area yet. Samples were collected through six commercial bottom trawl hauls carried out in the international waters of the Mediterranean at depths of 400-600 m on 12 and 13 June 2004. A total of 228 specimens was collected. Overall sex ratio, 1 male : 1.23 female, was significantly biased towards females (p<0.05). Mean carapace length (CL +/- SD) and mean weight (W +/- SD) of males and females were calculated as CL=35.66 +/- 3.96 (range=24-49 mm), W=18.98 +/- 4.95 (6.6-29.7 g) and CL=53.98 +/- 8.83 (33-67 mm), W=41.12 +/- 14.37 (13.9-71.15 g), respectively. The catch per unit effort (CPUE) ranged from 0.94 kg/hr to 8 kg/hr and the mean CPUE (+/- SD) and its variation coefficient were calculated as 4.76 +/- 2.41 and 50.73%, respectively. Plesionika martia (Pandalidae) and Aristeus antennatus (Aristeidae) were also observed in the total catch. The ratios of giant red shrimp in the total catch and in the total shrimp catch were calculated as 22.45% and 64.61%, respectively.
