| dc.description.abstract | Choosing the appropriate pruning system while also considering the cultivar and ecological conditions is among the primary purposes of modern fruit-growing. There is a lack of research on different pruning systems that aim to increase the yield per unit area and facilitate the harvest of fresh figs. This study was carried out to determine the yield and fruit quality characteristics of ‘Bursa Siyahı’ cultivar grown in the cordon pruning system, in the Eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey, from 2018 to 2020. Phenological stages such as the date of terminal budburst, the date of fruit formation, the beginning of fruit maturation, full maturity, and harvest period; yield characteristics such as yield per tree and yield per hectare; and fruit quality properties such as fruit weight (g), fruit width (mm), fruit length (mm), fruit neck length (mm), total soluble solids (TSS, %), pH, acidity, and fruit skin and flesh color variables were investigated. The yield per hectare for ‘Bursa Siyahı’ cultivar grown in the cordon pruning system was 3.51 to 8.51 tons/ha according to years. The duration of the harvesting period varied between seven and eight weeks, depending on the pollinated fruits. The fruit weight of ‘Bursa Siyahı’ was higher at the fourth and fifth leaf age (75.91 g and 76.73 g, respectively) compared to the third leaf age (72.72 g). The results indicate that the Smyrna-type ‘Bursa Siyahı’ can be cultivated in the cordon pruning system without a fruit coloration problem. The results revealed that the cordon pruning system has shown promising answers for the cultivation of the ‘Bursa Siyahı’ cultivar in the Eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey. © 2022 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
