Analysis of the Impressions of a Journalist and Politician on Some Developments in the Republican Period: Mehmet Asim Us and the Newspaper 'Vakit' (1927-1931)

Özet
Asim Us, a prominent journalist, grew up in the libertarian atmosphere of the Constitutional Period and studied at the Mekteb-i Mulkiye, one of the important institutions of the period, and took lessons from valuable personalities. During his school years at Mekteb-i Mulkiye, Us was not involved in political events, benefited from the library of Mekteb-i Mulkiye and gained serious knowledge through the books he read. He transferred this knowledge to the newspaper Vakit, which has practically been identified with his life. He became one of the prominent spokesmen of the Republican People's Party (CHF) and integrated with the reforms and the thoughts of Ataturk in his writings. He was always close to the founders of the Republic and this situation provided him with great opportunities. In this way, he entered the Parliament as the Artvin Deputy in the general elections of 1927. He was one of the biggest supporters of the Alphabet Reform accepted in 1928 and explained in his columns how easy it was to learn the new alphabet in practice. Asim Us's Vakit (the Time) newspaper was the first to announce the establishment of the Free Republican Party (SCF), which was established as an opposition party in 1930. The aim of this study is to reveal the memories of Asim Bey, leaving a mark on the Turkish press history with his journalist identity and the period with his politician identity, and Vakit's anatomy, and to analyse his thoughts about the period. In this study, not only the biography of Asim Us, but also his articles and the political atmosphere of the period are discussed. It is wished to contribute to the literature with this research by making use of the archives, press, minutes, and the memories of local and foreign witnesses of the period.
