Objective: By conducting this study, our aim is to early diagnose the developmental problems of premature infants that may have been oversighted during the routine medical examination by using the Denver Developmental Screening Test (DDST). Material and Method: The medical profiles of the infants who were admitted to the clinic between the dates of January 2005 and December 2007 with gestational age of <34 weeks were examined retrospectively. These cases of pre-school infants (aged 4-6) were called for a control and tested DDST. Results: Fifty six infants with gestational age of <34 weeks who were admitted to the clinic between January 2005 and December 2007 were examined. The mean gestational age was found to be 30.1±2.4 weeks and the birth weight was found as 1342±331.5 g respectively. Within the 56 premature cases who were tested DDST at the average age of 5.1±1.4 (4.1-6.4) 6 cases (10.7%) demonstrated developmental delay. Birth weight under 1500 g, gestational age of <32 weeks and existence of meningitis were diagnosed to be risk factors in the cases of premature infants. Conclusion: The fact that the presence of developmental delay is only in the 10.7% of the cases we have conducted the DDST can be interpreted as a promising result, meaning the high-quality neonatal care may give the prematurely born infants a chance to survive without any handicap. © 2016, Nobelmedicus.
