Özet
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate candida colonization in children with cerebral palsy. Materials and Methods: In the study, 71 patients who were diagnosed as cerebral palsy and 40 healthy children were included at the Child Neurology Outpatient Clinic of Faculty of Medicine, Mustafa Kemal University, between March and December 2011. The smear samples from four regions which were oral, axillary, inguinal and antecubital areas. Results: Within the investigated areas, it was found that the most common colonized region was mouth and the most frequent species was Candida albicans both the patients with cerebral palsy and control groups. When two groups were compared, it was seen that the colonization in the mouth was significantly different in both groups and the antibiotic usage in patients with cerebral palsy was associated with an increased colonization of the mouth and inguinal region. Conclusion: In patients with cerebral palsy, the use of antibiotics especially may predispose to colonization of candida which is more prominent in the mouth. © 2012 Düzce Medical Journal.
