National livestock policies have been influenced by local needs as well as by international organizations, trade agreements, and trends of leading countries. Turkey has been interacting with the European Union-Common Agricultural Policies (EU-CAP) due to economic and geopolitical reasons and it brings with it some opportunities and risks. Although Turkey has a deficit in agriculture foreign trade for many years, there is trade balance with EU in terms of livestock and livestock products. Some of the positive indicators for Turkey are; having competitive and culture advantages in close export markets compared to EU, having young population, increasing livestock supports and partial progress in respect of farm scale and automation. However, leading structural problems such as organization, marketing, genetic improvement and animal diseases causing international trade Barriers and vicious cycle of inadequate supply of red meat can make Turkey a permanent market for countries with cost and quality advantages. Other possible problems in EU-Turkey interactions are removal of milk quota in 2015 in EU, informal milk sector (street milk) in Turkey, and the risk of duty-free goods from United State of America (US) to Turkey as a result of currently negotiated EU-US Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. Turkey should give priority to "structural and social policies" to gain integrated producers, industrialists, public and consumers benefit, to get outcomes from the economic policies, and to experience better interaction with the EU in the future. In this study, it was aimed to assess the possible consequences of historical change and interaction of EU-Turkey livestock policies on the Turkey’s livestock sector. © 2018 Ataturk Universitesi. All Rights Reserved.en_US
