Özet

Kidney diseases are common in older African adults. With aging, the kidneys are among the most significantly affected organs in the human body, with both structural and functional changes that make them more susceptible to any additional injury. Many older African adults develop chronic kidney disease (CKD) from medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus similar to populations in other parts of the world. However, the higher incidence of primary and infection induced glomerular diseases leading to kidney injury, make kidney diseases very prevalent in the older African population. Endemic infections such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), diarrheal diseases, malaria and the common use of herbal or traditional medicines which are often nephrotoxic, lead to acute kidney injury (AKI) and confer unique characteristics that define kidney diseases in older African adults. High poverty rates and inadequate access to optimal medical care in most of Africa also greatly contribute to development of kidney diseases, particularly CKD. Knowledge of the unique characteristics of these patients with its accompanying challenges is of paramount importance in providing optimal medical care for this vulnerable subset of the population. In this chapter, we review the different patterns and management of kidney diseases in older African adults, as well as outlining normal age-related anatomical and physiologic changes in kidney function. © 2021 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
