Treatment selection choices during pregnancy should be based on the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) risk categories. The FDA categorized drugs as A, B, C, D, and X based on animal and human studies. Category D and category X drugs should be avoided during pregnancy, whereas category A and category B drugs are safe to use. Category C drugs should be considered case by case as there are no adequate studies on humans, but animal studies have shown the adverse effects on fetus. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.en_US
