Özet
Today, environmental problems resulting from rapid population growth, industrialization, excessive use of natural resources, and fossil fuels have become a global problem. This situation has led to the search for alternative energy sources. Biofuel energy source is of great importance in meeting energy needs because it does not harm the environment and is sustainable. Gas, liquid, and solid products obtained from agricultural and forest products, animal and vegetable residues and wastes, organic domestic, and industrial and urban wastes by thermochemical or biochemical methods are called biofuels. Continuous energy production can be achieved with biofuel energy. The storability of biomass energy is one of the important advantages it provides. Disadvantages are that they have a heterogeneous structure and high moisture content, that they are highly competitive in terms of agricultural land, and that their heap densities are low. These negative aspects of biomass are eliminated by various physical and chemical processes. Biofuel is produced from biomass through physical processes such as crushing, size reduction, pelletizing, bridging, grinding, filtration, and extraction, as well as biochemical and thermochemical conversion processes. This review summarizes the current knowledge on biofuel types, importance and applications, potential in the world, comparison with other renewable energy sources, principles of biorefinery and environmental, and social and economic sustainability of biofuel production. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
