Özet
This review was conducted to examine the ancient history and cultural heritage of Ficus carica in Turkey. In the review, historical findings, written tablets and resources, and academic research were used to follow the historical steps of fig in the Mediterranean region. The first finding so far were found in Çayönü tumulus ca. 10.250-9.550 BP (before present), Diyarbakır province in the southeast Anatolia region of Turkey. However, dense fig remains were in Yumuktepe (ca. 7.000-6.100 BC, Neolithic Period), Mersin province, eastern Mediterranean region. These findings clearly showed that the southern regions of Turkey were one of the original centers of figs. Figs started to become widespread with the start of culture cultivation in Anatolia and became a subject of trade. As a result, following the historical footsteps of the fig in Anatolia, it is seen that beyond being a fruit, it was a sacred symbol that shed light on the history of humanity. ‘Sarılop’ used for drying and ‘Bursa Siyahı’ used for table edible fig cultivars are the main commercial cultivars for consumption and trade obtained by selection breeding from Asia Minor. © 2022 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
