dc.description.abstractCurrent problems such as migration, population growth, and rapid urbanization threaten the urban environments we live in today, and many more potential problems await us with global climate change. In response to these problems, solutions such as resilient cities, smart cities, and urban open and green space systems are on the agenda. Urban open and green spaces have a crucial role in increasing the resilience of the city and improving urban well-being with regard to the ecosystem services they provide. However, the connection of these green spaces within a system setup is important to maximize ecosystem services provided and environmental performance. The aim of this study is to define the concept of green infrastructure, which is an urban open and green space system that attracts a great deal of interest from the academy, and to discuss current studies on urban tree canopy, which is an important layer of this system. Given its economic, social, and environmental benefits, urban tree canopy should be measured, monitored, and rationally managed for creating sustainable and livable cities. © Peter Lang AG 2020.en_US
