dc.description.abstract | Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are chemicals that are used frequently in many types of industries, both in the past and the present. The carbon-fluorine bonds in the structures of PFCs add a characteristic feature to these compounds. This bond gives PFCs resistance to chemical and biochemical attacks, stability against hydrolysis, photolysis, acids, bases, and biodegradation. Therefore these compounds are classified as permanent organic pollutants since they are not degraded in nature. The most common members of PFCs in the environment are perfluorooctanoic acid and perfloroctane sulfonic acid. The main source of exposure to PFCs is contaminated foods, which are transported through the food chain. Transport of PFCs through the food chain causes them to be passed on to animals that eat plants contaminated with PFCs and then to people who eat those animals or their products. This review summarizes the current knowledge about the types and occurrence of PFCs, their fate and transportation, and their toxicity for humans and animals. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.
