Öğe Determination of Organic Fish Purchase Tendency of Consumers: A Case Study for Hatay Province, Turkey(Medwell Online, 2009) Dagistan, Erdal; Demirtas, Bekir; Akpinar, M. Goksel; Yilmaz, Yalcin; Gul, Mevlut; Koc, BesirNumerous studies have developed and validated models and instruments for consumer behaviours. However, cahracteristics of decision making still remain unknown. In this study, we attempted to investigate decision making behaviours of consumers for organic fishery products in Hatay province of Turkey. The data were collected from Antakya district located in the centre of Hatay province and were analyzed with factor analysis method. Out of 442 reports gathered through face to face interviews, 412 were found to be suitable for the analysis. Results indicated that four factors were found to be effective in assessing consumer tendencies regarding organic fish consumption. Shopping place, quality, health and price were the main factors, which explained 65.34% of the variation. More than half of the consumers seemed to be willing to pay 10-30% more for organic fish. In addition, organic fish consumtion tendency is accounted for 36.20% in the research area. It appears that there is a potential market for organic fishery products in the area under the investigation.Öğe Determination of technical efficiency in cotton growing farms in Turkey: A case study of Cukurova region(Academic Journals, 2009) Gul, Mevlut; Koc, Besir; Dagistan, Erdal; Akpinar, M. Goksel; Parlakay, OguzThis paper analyses technical efficiency of cotton farms in Cukurova region in Turkey. Data was collected from cotton farms through a questionnaire study. Data collection was carried out following 2004-2005 growing seasons. Technical efficiency of cotton farms was estimated by using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and technical efficiency scores were calculated employing an input oriented DEA. Tobit regression analysis was used to identify determinants of technical efficiency. Results indicate that cotton farmers can save inputs by at least 20% while remaining at the same production level. Factors strongly affecting efficiency level of the farmers were found to be farmers' age, education level and groups of cotton growing areas.Öğe Determining Household Preferences for Fish Consumption with Conjoint Analysis in Turkey(Medwell Online, 2009) Akpinar, M. Accordingly, the fish quality set and sales conditions that maximize consumer utility were determined. The study was conveyed in Hatay province urban area sample as a section of Turkey. The data retrieved from face to face survey implemented on household level in 2008 was used for the study. The conjoint analysis method, as a multivariate analysis was implemented for assessment of household data. Consequently, it was found that variety, supply channel, price and production method were effective and significant in purchasing preference of the consumer at rates of 29.7, 28.0, 27.2 and 15.1%, respectively. In addition, the utility maximizing fish quality set was determined as variety: gilt-head bream; production method: organic; supply chain: fish market; price: moderate.Öğe Identifying Technical Efficiency of Dairy Cattle Management in Rural Areas Through a Non-Parametric Method: A Case Study for the East Mediterranean in Turkey(Medwell Online, 2009) Dagistan, Erdal; Koc, Besir; Gul, Mevlut; Parlakay, Oguz; Akpinar, M. GokselThere are many aspects regarding the success of dairy cattle management and productivity. In this study, amount and kinds of feed, costs of veterinary consultancy, herd size, labor and capital were utilized to estimate technical efficiency of dairy cattle management in small scale farms in the east Mediterranean region of Turkey. A non-parametric efficiency analysis was used for the data obtained through face-to-face interviews in 100 small scale farms. We used tobit regression analysis to determine the effectiveness of possible factors affecting production performances of the farms. The results suggested that the average technical efficiency is unsatisfactory since Constant Returns to Scale (CRS) and Variable Returns to Scale (VRS) values are relatively <1 (0.59 and 0.83, respectively). Only 13 and 46% of the farms were found to be efficient in terms of CRS and VRS, respectively. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) showed that the farms had excess input usage ranging from 10-22%. To increase efficiency scores in subsidiary profit farms in semi-arid east Mediterranean conditions, farmers should adopt new methodologies, which decrease the costs and excess input usage in such semi-pasture management systems.
