The effects of industrialization on air quality in Iskenderun, north east Mediterranean
(Trans Tech Publications Ltd, 1997) Ornektekin, S
The coasts of the Gulf of Iskenderun are intensively industrialized when compared with the Mediterranean coasts of Turkey. Main industries existing in the region are iron and steel complexes, fertilizer, cement, coal fired plants in addition pipe line terminals. In this study, urban air quality in the Gulf of Iskenderun was evaluated on the basis of daily integrated SO2 and smoke contents that are being measured in the city- center of Iskenderun for the period of 1990-1996.Monthly averages were found to be under the long term limits (LTS) and short term limits (STL) of the Turkish air quality protection regulation except January, February, March and October, 1990. Results were discussed for the relationships between some climatic parameters and SO2 and smoke contents of the atmospheric air in Iskenderun city.

A heavy metal pollution in industrial zone and its effect on soil and spring water in Iskenderun Bay, north-east Mediterranean
    (Kluwer Academic Publ, 1997) Ornektekin, S; Tamer, L; Bilgin, R; Terzi, T
The Bay of Iskenderun is located in the north-eastern corner of Mediterranean Sea. The coasts of the Bay are intensively industrialized when compared with the Mediterranean coasts of Turkey. These are fertilizer and cement industries, iron and steel complexes, coal fired plants, a pipe line terminal and E 5-Road with heavy traffic. In this study 30 soil samples taken from 10m centers and 500m, 1000m, 1500m, 2000m, 3000m, 5000m distances to the Industrial Zone were analyzed for their heavy metal concentrations, such as Pb, Mn, Cd, Fe, Zn, Cu, Cr, Mg, Ca. 20 water samples were collected from drinkable water sources in the industrial zone and close villages. Heavy metal concentrations in the samples were determined by the use of Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. It was found that the metal ion concentrations were higher in close distances to the Industrial Zone except Ca, Mg ions. On getting far away from the zone, a decrease in metal concentrations was observed. COD levels, pH, NOx in water were also determined. The result show that heavy metal concentrations in soil and in water were higher than acceptable toxic limits, given in literature, except lead, copper, chromium and manganese concentrations.

The performance of UNIFAC and related group contribution models .1. Prediction of infinite dilution activity coefficients
(Elsevier, 1996) Paksoy, HO; Ornektekin, S; Balcl, B; Demirel, Y
Infinite dilution activity coefficients have been calculated for 24 systems including highly non-ideal and nearly non-ideal using original, modified UNIFAC and UNIFAC-FV models. The calculations are compared with experimental results. The performance of the models in predictions and the significance of free volume effects on solvent activities in solutions containing small compounds are discussed.

The performance of UNIFAC and related group contribution models .2. Prediction of Henry's law constants
(Elsevier, 1996) Ornektekin, S; Paksoy, HO; Demirel, Y
Henry's law constants for 24 different systems have been determined using UNIFAC and related group contribution models. The results obtained from original, modified and free-volume effect UNIFAC models are compared with experimental results, Empirical relationships for the temperature-dependency of Henry's constant for the chloroform(1)-water(2) system are also determined.
