Determination of Budding Success in Loquat Budding Done in Unheated Greenhouse Conditions
(Kahramanmaras Sutcu Imam Univ Rektorlugu, 2021) Polat, A. Aytekin
This research was carried out to determine of the budding success in T and chip buddings done on loquat seedlings in unheated glasshouse conditions. 'Hafif Cukurgobek' loquat cultivar was budded on one-year-old loquat seedlings with T and chip budding methods on 9 November, 2017 and with chip buddings on 8, February, 2018. In the first budding period ten plants and in the second budding period 6 plants were used in each replication. The percent of bud-take successes were recorded after 30-45 days of the budding operations. In the bud take, the top of the rootstock was cut with a pruning shear 10 cm above the budding point in order to sprout of the budding eyes. After 30 days of this cutting, the ratio of bud-sprout was recorded. The highest success rate was obtained from T budding (64.9 %) on 9 November. This was followed by chip buddings (61.0 %) on 9 November, 2017. In the chip buddings on 8 February of 2018 achieved a 44.8% budding success. Although the budding success of buddings in the autumn-winter period was lower than the budding success of the buddings made in the spring period, it has been determined that a satisfactory level of budding can be obtained from these periods. The research has shown that the budding period can be extended in loquat nurseries by budding in greenhouse conditions during autumn-winter months.

Determination of germination rate coefficients of loquat seeds and their embryos stratified in various media for different duration
    (1997) Polat, A. Aytekin
In this paper, the effects of stratification, stratification period and stratification media on the coefficients of germination rates of the seeds and embryos of Gold Nugget and Tanaka loquat cultivars were investigated. Seeds were stratified at 4°C (cool) and at room temperatures. Both the seeds and embryos obtained from the stratified seeds germinated quicker than those of the unstratified seeds. Germination rate coefficient of the seeds, stratified at room temperature (8.56) were higher than that of the seeds stratified at 4°C (7.21). The embryos of the seeds, stratified at 4°C. showed higher germination rate coefficients (15.48) than that of the seeds, stratified at room temperature (13,40). Seeds, stored 30 days in both storage media, stratified or unstratified, and their embryos, obtained from them, germinated in shorter period than that of those, stored 15 days.

Determination of productivity and fruit set ratios of various loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) cultivars under Mediterranean conditions
(Rsnz Publishing, 2007) Polat, A. Aytekin
This study was conducted to determine fruit set ratios and productivity of four loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) cultivars, 'Gold Nugget', 'Kanro', 'Baffico', and 'Dr. Trabut' on the coast of the Mediterranean region of Turkey between 2001 and 2003. Elevation of the experimental site was c. 158 m, with an average annual temperature of 19 degrees C and annual rainfall of 556mm (average of 1983-2003). To determine fruit set, a branch was randomly selected from all four directions on each tree. Approximately 250-300 flower buds were counted before the blossom at each of these selected branches making a total of c. 1000-1200 flower buds on each tree. Percent blossom ratios, % initial fruit set, and % final fruit set were determined during the experimental period. Furthermore, productivity of the cultivars was calculated by the proportion of the total flower buds to the final fruit amount. The relation between minimum, maximum, and average temperature values as well as relative humidity and precipitation between October and February, which covers blossom periods and fruit set ratios, were also examined by correlation. Our results showed that the highest rates for the above-mentioned properties were taken in 2002 except % blossom, the highest rates were for 'Gold Nugget' for the other three properties. According to 3-year averages, 'Gold Nugget' showed higher rates on initial fruit set, final fruit set, and productivity (12.39%, 11.03%, and 10.22%, respectively). Percent initial fruit set was between 6.98% and 9.70%, % final fruit set was between 5.66% and 7.55%, and productivity was between 5.33% and 6.94% for the other three cultivars.

Determining total phenolic content and total antioxidant capacity of loquat cultivars grown in Hatay
(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2010) Polat, A. Aytekin; Caliskan, Oguzhan; Serce, Sedat; Saracoglu, Onur; Kaya, Cemal; Ozgen, Mustafa
Several fruit characteristics of five loquat (Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb.) Lindl.) cultivars/selections grown in Dortyol, Hatay, Turkey were investigated in 2008. The cultivars/selections included 'Baduna 5', Guzelyurt 1, 'Hafif Cukurgobek', 'Ottaviani,' and Type 1. The characteristics evaluated included fruit weight, width, length, seed number and weight, flesh/seed ratio, total soluble solids (TSS), pH, acidity, total phenolic (TP) content, and total antioxidant capacity (TAC), determined by the ferric reducing antioxidant power ( FRAP) assay. The analyses were conducted by three replicates, with 30 fruits in each replicate. The results indicated that there were significant differences among the cultivars, for all the traits tested. For example, 'Hafif Cukurgobek' and 'Ottaviani' had smaller fruits than others, although 'Hafif Cukurgobek' had heavier seeds. The flesh/seed ratio was the highest in Type 1, while 'Hafif Cukurgobek' had the highest pH and high soluble solids. 'Baduna 5' and 'Hafif Cukurgobek' had the highest acidity. The TP ranged from 129 ('Baduna 5') to 578 ('Hafif Cukurgobek') mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/kg fresh fruit (fw). 'Hafif Cukurgobek' also had the highest FRAP mean (12.1 mmol Trolox Equivalent (TE)/kg fw). The results suggest that loquat cultivars have a variable range of TP content and a relatively high total antioxidant capacity, which is crucial for human health.

Effect of Canopy Orientation on Flowering Time and Fruit Set in Loquat
(Int Soc Horticultural Science, 2015) Polat, A. Aytekin
This study was conducted in a loquat orchard located at the Dortyol Experimental Station of Mustafa Kemal University, Antakya, Turkey. The experimental orchard was established in 1997 with one-year-old plants grafted on seedling rootstocks. The objective of the study was to investigate the effects of canopy orientation (North, East, South, and West) on flowering time and fruit set of various loquat cultivars. In the study, one local ('Hafif Cukurgobek') and six foreign loquat cultivars ('Golden Nugget', 'Sayda', 'Lapta-B2', 'Baduna-5', 'Ottowianni', and 'Sampiyon') were evaluated. The phenological traits such as beginning, full and end of blossoming as well as percentage of fruit set of each cultivar were recorded in each of the four sides of the canopy. To determine flowering and fruit set, bud, flower and fruit numbers were counted on four branches per tree in each of the four canopy sides. In each of the selected branch, approximately 100-150 apical floriferous buds were selected at the pre-blossom phase and all phenological observations were carried out. Percentage of final fruit set was determined during the maturation period. Significant differences were found among cultivars for all the traits considered. In addition, blossoming and fruit set percentages were significantly affected by canopy orientation, with the highest rates of blossoming and fruit set being from the south side of the canopy.

Effect of indolebutyric acid (IBA) on rooting of cutting in various pomegranate genotypes
    (2009) Polat, A. Aytekin; Caliskan, O.
Rooting of stem cuttings of five pomegranate types selected from Delibekirli village, K?r?khan (Antakya, Hatay-Turkey) taken in different periods under mist-propagation were investigated. The cuttings were prepared as 20-25 cm in length from wood shoots, and 1,000 ppm indolebutyric acid (IBA) was used as a rooting hormone. In the study, rooting ratio (%), root number, and root length of the cutting were measured. Among the cuttings rooted, the highest rooting percentage was observed in 31-N-01, while the lowest rooting percentage in 31-N-05. The cuttings taken at the end of February had higher rooting percentage than those taken at the beginning of October. The 1,000 ppm IBA treated cutting had a slightly higher rooting percentage than the control. The number of roots was highest in the cutting of the 31-N-01 type and lowest in the cutting of the 31-N-05 type. There were higher roots in the 1,000 ppm IBA treated cuttings than the control cuttings for the 31-N-01, 31-N-02 and 31N-03 types whereas the 31-N-04 and 31-N-05 types had lower roots in the 1,000 ppm IBA treated cuttings than the control cuttings. 31-N-01 type when compared to others gave more favorable results in terms of root length. The 1,000 ppm IBA treatment affected positively rooting percent of cuttings and the other characteristics although it was not to the satisfactory level. It was concluded that the increasing dose of IBA could be useful.

Effect of natural lipid on pollen germination and pollen tube growth on loquat
(Asian Network for Scientific Information, 2007) Demirkeser, T. Hakan; Çalişkan, O?uzhan; Polat, A. Aytekin; Özgen, Mustafa; Serçe, Sedat
The present study evaluated the effects of a natural lipid, Lysophosphatidylethanolamine, (L) on the eight-year old loquat (Sayda) orchard located on coastal Mediterranean region in Hatay. The applications were conducted prior to bloom (Treatment I) and the same branches were treated again after two weeks from Treatment I (Treatment I+II) while the control branches were treated with water. After two weeks from the second application, buds were sampled from all experimental units and pollen viability test were conducted by standard methods. Randomly sampled buds from all treatments were kept on a room temperature to obtain pollen for both varieties and treatments. The pollen were germinated on media having various concentration of sucrose (5, 10, 15 and 20%) and incubated at 10, 15 and 20°C. The Petri dishes were placed on -20°C after 3, 6, or 9 h incubation to consecutively determine their germination rates and pollen tube growths under a light microscope. The results clearly demonstrated that L application before bloom significantly improves pollen germination rate and pollen tube growth although it has no effect on pollen viability. Among the incubation treatments, 20°C gave the most favorable results for both pollen germination rate and pollen tube growth. The highest pollen germination rates were recovered from 20% sucrose concentration while the longest pollen tubes were at 15%. The positive effects of L may be very advantageous for loquat growing especially for the early fruit production regions. © 2007 Asian Network for Scientific Information.

Effects of Hawthorn Rootstock on Yield and Fruit Quality in Loquat
(Kahramanmaras Sutcu Imam Univ Rektorlugu, 2024) Polat, A. Aytekin
The aim of the study is to determine the effects of hawthorn rootstocks on yield and fruit quality of the Hafif cukurgobek (HcG) loquat cultivar. In the study, loquat seedling rootstock was also used as a control. Fruit pomological analysis and yield characteristics of the cultivar/rootstock combinations in the study were determined. In order to determine the fruit quality, 50 fruits were randomly picked from each cultivar/rootstock combination, and physical measurements and chemical analyses were carried out with five replicates. Plants grafted on hawthorn rootstock provide two days of earliness on the fruit harvest date. Hawthorn rootstock provided two days of earliness in fruit harvest (May 17) compared to loquat seedling rootstock. Fruit weight and fruit dimensions were 16.89 g, 32.13 mm and 34.62 mm, respectively, on quince rootstock while it was determined as 18.32 g, 31.72 mm and 33.67 mm in loquat seedling rootstock. Seed number and seed weight were lower in hawthorn rootstock (3.40 and 4.40 g, respectively) than in loquat seedling rootstock (4.02 and 5.25 g, respectively). In terms of flesh/seed ratio, a higher value was obtained from hawthorn rootstock (2.84) than from loquat seedling rootstock (2.50). The total soluble solid value was determined as 9.40% in fruits grown on hawthorn rootstock and 11.30% in fruits grown on loquat seedling rootstock. Titratable acidity was calculated as 0.34% in hawthorn rootstock and 0.44% in loquat rootstock. The effect of rootstocks on fruit skin and flesh color was generally similar. The fruit skin color L and a* (red -green color) were found to be higher in fruits grown on loquat rootstock than on hawthorn rootstock. Hawthorn rootstock gave higher values (1.48 g mm2 -1 and 1141 kg da -1, respectively) than loquat seedling rootstock (0.79 g mm2 -1 and 1051 kg da -1, respectively) in terms of yield per unit trunk cross-sectional area and yield per unit area. However, the study needs to be continued in order to reach a more definite conclusion.

The effects of seedlings with different diameter and budding scions with different characteristics on budding success in loquats
(TUBITAK, 1999) Polat, A. Aytekin; Durgaç, Coşkun; Kamilo?lu, Önder
The objective of this work was to determine the effects on the budding success of loquat seedlings with different diameters and budding scions with different characteristics. The investigation was carried out during 1996 and 1997 years in Antakya. Hafif Çukurgöbek, Sayda, Gold Nugget and Şampiyon were used as the cultivars. The budding scions taken from bearing and non-bearing branches of these cultivars were budded on loquat seedlings with two different diameters (0.50-0.99 cm. and 1.00-1.50 cm.) by using T budding method. The percentage of bud-take (88.84 %) and bud-sprouting (63.51 %) in buddings of budding scions taken from non-fruited branches were found higher than the ones taken from fruited branches. The ratio of the budding success in the loquat seedlings with 1.00-1.50 cm. diameter was higher than the ones with 0.50-0.99 cm. But this difference was not found statistically important.

Fruit characteristics of fig cultivars and genotypes grown in Turkey
(Elsevier, 2008) Caliskan, Oguzhan; Polat, A. Aytekin
In this study, fruit quality characteristics of some cultivars and types of fig (Ficus carica L.) were determined in Dortyol, Hatay, Turkey, which has a Mediterranean climate. The main fig cultivars grown in Turkey ('Sarilop', 'Bursa Siyahi', 'Goklop', 'Yediveren', 'Yesilguz', 'Morguz', 'Sari Zeybek', and 'Ufak Yesil') were evaluated along with 24 selections from a larger collection from the Mediterranean Region of Turkey. Several pomological characteristics of the genotypes were determined on 5-year-old trees during the 2001 and 2002 growing season. Averaged over the 2 years, fruit weight ranged between 22 and 52 g, total soluble solids content (TSS) ranged between 20.1 and 27.4%, and acidity ranged between 0.09 and 0.26%. 'Bursa Siyahi', 'Goklop', 31-IN-17, 31-IN-11 and 31-IN-09 produced the largest fruits in terms of fruit weight and dimensions. 31-IN-01, 31-IN-02, 'Yesilguz', 'Morguz' and 'Ufak Yesil' had the highest TSS. 'Yediveren', 'Goklop', Bursa Siyahi' and 31-IN-16 scored the highest in overall quality according to the weighted ranked method. Based on the results obtained 'Yediveren, 'Goklop' and 31-IN-16 could be alternatives to 'Bursa Siyahi', currently the most favored fresh table fig cultivar. These alternatives appear to have potential for both local consumption and export markets. Our results also indicate extensive diversity among Turkish figs permitting marketing of a broad range of fresh fig traits. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2008) Polat, A. Aytekin; Caliskan, O.
Fig (Ficus carica) is one of the most important fruit species of Mediterranean countries. Turkey is one of top countries in the world for the production of various cultivars of fig. In this study, fruit quality characteristics of some fresh fig cultivars ('Bursa Siyahi', 'Yediveren', 'Sari Zeybek', 'Goklop', 'Morguz', 'Yeilguz') and 01-IM-02 genotype were determined in Kirikhan County' Hatay, Turkey, which has a Mediterranean climate. Several pomological characteristics of the genotype and cultivars were determined on 5-year-old trees during the 2001-03 growing season. Averaged over the 3 years, fruit weight was determined between 30.0 and 52.4 g; fruit width between 35.8 and 48.4 mm; fruit length between 36.2 and 48.3 mm; neck length between 3.1 and 7.2 mm; ostiole width between 0.8 and 2.4 mm; total soluble solid contents (TSS) between 22.7 and 27.2%; pH between 4.8 and 5.3; titratable acidity between 0.20 and 0.38%; and TSS/acidity between 75.4 and -139.0. Yield values ranged from 0.42 to 2.83 kg/tree. 'Yediveren 'Goklop', and 'Bursa Siyahi' Cultivars and 01-IM-02 genotype produced the largest fruits in terms of fruit weight and fruit dimensions. 01-IM-02, 'Bursa Siyahi', and 'Yediveren' scored the highest in overall quality according to the weighted ranked method. The objective colour measurements determined the differences between fruit skin colour and flesh colour of fig cultivars and genotype. According to data obtained, 01-IM-02, 'Bursa Siyahi', and 'Yediveren'

Growth and fruit quality of some foreign loquat cultivars in the subtropical climate of the Turkish Mediterranean region
(Amer Pomological Soc, 2006) Polat, A. Aytekin; Caliskan, Oguzhan
Loquat is an important fruit for the Mediterranean Region of Turkey. Four loquat cultivars ('Kanto', 'Baffico', 'Dr. Trabut' and 'Gold Nugget') were evaluated from 2001 to 2004. Growth, phenology and fruit characteristics were determined in Hatay, on the eastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey. The trunk diameter and annual shoot growth were significantly higher in 'Kanro' than 'Baffico.' and 'Dr. Trabut'. The highest yield was from 'Kanto' and 'Gold Nugget'. Harvest dates ranged from 18 May to 27 May. The earliest maturing cultivars were 'Dr. Trabut' and 'Baffico', while the latest maturing cultivar was 'Kanro'. 'Dr. Trabut' had significantly higher fruit weight than 'Baffico'. Mean seed weight ranged between 3.9 and 6.0 g and average number of seeds per fruit ranged between 2.8-4.5; 'Dr. Trabut' had significantly higher values than 'Kanto' for both of these variables. The flesh/seed ratio in 'Kanto' was significantly higher than 'Gold Nugget'. 'Baffico' had the highest total soluble solids content while 'Gold Nugget' had the lowest. The results suggest that these cultivars can be grown in Mediterranean climate successfully. Adaptation of the cultivars to the region is most likely to increase the production and quality of loquat as well.

Hafif Çukurgöbek Yenidünya Çeşidinde Vejetatif Büyüme, Çiçek Salkım Özellikleri, Çiçeklenme ve Meyve Tutumu Üzerine Bazı Anaçların Etkileri
(2022) Polat, A. Aytekin; Sezer, Ugur
Çalışmanın amacı, Quince-A, Quince-C, BA-29 ayva klon anaçlarının Hafif Çukurgöbek (HÇG) yenidünya çeşidinin vejetatif büyümesi, fenolojik özellikleri, çiçeklenme ve meyve tutum oranları üzerine etkisini araştırmaktır.
