Volar skin is a relatively infrequent site of malignant melanoma in Caucasian patients, although the foot is the most common site of involvement in Asian and African populations. Diagnosis of ALM is usually delayed and melanomas can be diagnosed at advanced clinical stages, so the prognosis is often poor. We present a Caucasian Turkish man with ALM on the interdigital site of his foot, however, as a result of maceration of the surrounding skin, it seemed to be tinea pedis.Öğe Expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase in human cutaneous leishmaniasis(Springer, 2005) Serarslan, G; Atik, ECutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is an infectious disease caused by Leishmania parasite. The expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and generation of nitric oxide in response to IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha is important in control of infection. The aim of the study was to determine the expression of iNOS in the lesions of Leishmania tropica, and whether there was a correlation between the level of expression and the duration of the disease. Punch biopsy was performed from patients (n = 29) and iNOS immunohistochemical staining was applied. Expression of iNOS protein was detected 82.8% of patients. There was a strong expression with the duration of the disease less than 6 months (p < 0.002). These findings demonstrate that iNOS has a role in L. tropica especially during the early stages of the infection.Öğe Nodular mastocytosis of the vulva: an unusual localisation(Wiley, 2005) Serarslan, G; Atik, E; Zeteroglu, S[Abstract Not Available]Öğe Serum antioxidant activities, malondialdehyde and nitric oxide levels in human cutaneous leishmaniasis(Blackwell Publishing Ltd, 2005) Serarslan, G; Yilmaz, HR; Sögüt, SLeishmania sp. are obligate intracellular protozoa that infect and replicate within mammalian macrophages. Macrophages, neutrophils and other phagocytic cells are key components of the antimicrobial and tumoricidal immune responses. These cells are capable of generating large amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS). To examine antioxidant status and lipid peroxidation in cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) patients, activities of two ROS scavenging enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO.) have been studied in serum. Blood samples were taken from CL patients before treatment (n = 27) and after the treatment (n = 18). NO. and MDA levels, SOD and GSH-Px activities were compared between untreated and treated CL patients and control subjects (n = 23). There was a significant decrease in SOD and GSH-Px activities in the CL patients (P < 0.0001). Significantly higher levels of serum MDA and NO. levels were found in CL patients, compared to controls and treated patients. It may be suggested that the overproduction of ROS and RNS results in oxidative stress and the acceleration of lipid peroxidation in CL patients, resulting from altered enzymatic antioxidant activities.
