Abstract
In this study, it is aimed to determine the distribution of etiological agents in urinary tract infections in Van Ipek Yolu State Hospital and to determine antibiotic susceptibility of Escherichia coli strains. The urine samples of patients with urinary tract infection admitted to outpatient clinics between August 2008-June 2009 were cultured. The most frequently isolated microorganisms were E.coli (49 %), Klebsiella (13 %), Streptococcus (9 %), Enterobacter (8 %). The results of in vitro antibacterial suspectibiliy testing of E.coli strains to different antibiotics were as below; 97 % of strains were found to be susceptible to nitrofurantoin, 73 % to gentamicin, 67 % to ceftriaxone, 65 % to cefuroxime, 62 % to ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin, 39 % to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and 35 % to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid. It is concluded that in empirical treatment of uncomplicated lower urinary tract infections due to E.coli nitrofurantoin may be used.
