This study was performed in different parts of Adana provinces (Centrum-Yuregir, Kozan, Feke, Saimbeyli, Aladağ, Pozantı, Karaisalı and Ceyhan) between June and October 2004. Samples were chosen randomly in different age and sexes. The aim of the study was to investigate to detect blood parasites and vector ticks of horses using cELISA and microscopic examinations. Materials of the study were constituted serums and blood smears in the samples taken blood from the horses vena jugularis and ear of the tips. In this study, blood smears were stained with Giemsa stain, and then the samples were identified for B. equi and B. caballi. But no piroplasm form of Babesia species were found in all samples. Serological assessments by cELISA were revealed that B. equi antibodies were positive in 56.8 % of the samples analyzed. Most of them the older horses. However, B. caballi antibodies were not detected in the samples. It was also found that the ticks which were taken from horses were Hyalomma marginatum and Rhipicephalus turanicus species. It was concluded that subclinical and chronic Babesia infections were common in horses in different parts of Adana. Serologic method was found to be more sensitive than microscopic examination for the investigation of Babesia porter horses.
