Özet

In this study, the construction process and design features of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey Samsun Branch building, which was built in the city center of Samsun in the early 1940s, are discussed. As a result of the architectural competition organised by the Central Bank in 1939 for the design of the building, a project that did not receive a degree was published with the first three awarded projects in Arkitekt, the most important architecture magazine of the period. In the light of these projects, a number of different applications are encountered when the architectural character of the existing building is compared. It is seen that the project of architect Hisni Timer, who won the first place in the project competition, was implemented with partial changes. However, no documents or information could be found regarding the reason for this change in the project implementation. Although the original projects of the existing building could not be reached, both the content of the projects participating in the competition and the photographs of the construction process of the building provide important data on the evaluation of the building within the framework of architectural history. Leman Tomsu, Sinan Mimaro??lu, Hisni Timer and Eyip Komircio??lu, who presented projects related to the building, worked with the leading architects and the city planners of the period and took part as both architects and jury members in the projects of various state buildings. It is seen that the architects in question repeated the basic features of the architecture of the bank buildings of the period in the projects they submitted for the Central Bank building in Samsun. The customer hall in the center of the plan, the corridor and administrative rooms surrounding the hall in question, and the safe room located in the basement floor center constitute the basic lines of the plan schemes presented for the building. It can be said that the building, which reflects the character of the National Architecture movement of the period with its facade design, is an important component of Bankalar Caddesi (Banks Street), which began to take shape at the end of the 19th century. The building, which is one of the few representatives of the Second National Architectural Movement in Samsun, also has the feature of being one of the rare bank buildings designed in Anatolia in the context of the National Architecture Movement. However, the lack of a scientific evaluation related to the building is interpreted as a deficiency in terms of the architectural history of Samsun, and in this context, our study contributes to the architectural memory of the city. The aim of the study is to introduce and document the building, which is threatened with extinction due to urban transformation and environmental factors, on a scientific basis.
