Özet

The objective of this research is to identify the oral reading mistakes third grade elementary school students make and their reading and comprehension levels. In addition, it is to study the effect of the socioeconomic status and the educational level of the family and in-house reading habits of parents on students' reading levels. The research was conducted on totally 130 students chosen from 15 elementary schools impartially in Mamak district or Ankara. Recorded students' reading and these records analyzed according to informal reading inventory. One-way variance analysis, Scheffe's test, frequency and percentage were utilized in analyzing and interpreting the data. At the end of the research, it was established that a vast majority of students' (44.61%) reading level is at the instruction level, that their comprehension level is 72% and that they make 7 types of oral reading mistakes. It was also observed that there is a statistically meaningful difference between students' reading levels, and the family's socioeconomic status and educational level and parents' in-home reading.
