Effects of some rootstock on cold storage of 'Red Chief' apples

This study was carried out to determine the effects of MM106 and MM111 rootstocks on storage performance of 'Red Chief' apple cultivar, a new cultivar in Turkey. Fruits were obtained from trees grafted on MM106 and MM111 and stored at 0 degrees C and 90% relative humidity (RH) for 6 months. Percent weight loss, fruit flesh firmness fg-force), total soluble solids (TSS) (%), starch level (1-10 scale) and titretable acidity (%) were determined on fruit samples taken at a monthly interval. The weight loss and TSS content increased while acidity and fruit flesh firmness decreased during the 6 storage period. Percent weight loss were significantly higher in 'Red Chief apples grafted on MM106 (3.29%) than on fruits MM111 (2.60%) at the end of storage. Fruits from MM106 were firmer than those from MM111 at harvest and after the storage period even with the rapid conversion of starch to sugars after 3-4 months of storage.
