The peninsula, where the Kuban River flows into the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea, can be considered one of the most productive regions of the Black Sea. Due to this feature, the peninsula has attracted the attention of various nations since ancient times. The foundation of Taman was realized as a result of the colonial activities of Greeks, one of these nations, in the region in the 6th century B.C. After the Greeks, the region changed hands frequently, and finally the peninsula came under the sovereignty of the Ottoman State at the end of the 15th century. The Ottoman State organized Taman as a district center affiliated to Kefe. In order to stabilize the Taman Peninsula, which became a relatively unstable region as a result of the Russian expansionist policy towards the Caucasus in the late 16th century, the Ottoman State resettled some Circassian communities living in various parts of the Caucasus in the 17th century and the Noghais who had to migrate from Itil as a result of the pressure of the Kalmyuks in the 17th century. This settlement policy was aimed at ensuring the security of the country's borders and developing economic activities such as agriculture, animal husbandry and fisheries in the region. In this study, the administrative and demographic structure of Taman in the second half of the 17th century and its economic activities based on production, especially agriculture, were mentioned. Since there is no monograph on Taman in the Turkish literature, the study is quite important. The main source of this study, which aims to reveal the demographic structure of Taman and the economic activities based on production in Taman, is the documents and notebooks in the Ottoman Archives of the Prime Ministry, and chronicles and travel books providing information about the region. © 2020, Abidin Temizer.
