ABSTRACTRESEARCH OF HEAVY METAL LEVELS IN WATER, SEDIMENT ANDAFRICAN CATFISH (Clarias gariepinus BURCHELL, 1822) OF THE ORONTESRIVERThis study was carried out to determine the heavy metal accumulation inOrontes River which is the most important water resource of the Hatay region. Seasonalconcentrations of Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn were investigated from thewater, sediment, and African catfish (Clarias gariepinus BURCHELL, 1822) samples. At the end of the study, it has been determined that metal concentrations weresignificantly different by seasons (p<0,005). Generally, the higher accumulation in fishand water samples were measured in summer, in sediment samples were measured inwinter. Additionally, between the accumulation in fish tissue, generally the highest wasin the liver but the highest Cr and Mn concentrations found in the gill, and the highestZn was in the skin. The minimum Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb accumulations were measured in skintissues, and Co, Cr, Fe, Ni, Zn accumulations were measured in muscle tissues.Accumulations in sediment were higher (except Cd in water), comparing withwater and fish. The highest Cd accumulation was in water. The Cr and Ni levels werefound as fish
