Akabane virus (AKAV) infection is an important viral infection that causes economic losses in ruminants. Infection is mostly asymptomatic in adult cattle, sheep and goats, but can lead to anomalies, abortions, poor offspring and fetal death after intrauterine infection. The presence of AKAV infection has been reported in different regions of Turkey, but there is limited information about its presence in the Mediterranean region, including the provinces of Hatay and Adana. In this study, blood serum for serological control was sampled from a total of 8 different enterprises in the hands of the public, where independent sheep and goats were housed together, 5 enterprises from Adana and 3 enterprises from Hatay. Seropositivity was found to be 24.03% (50/208) in sheep sampled from Adana province, 36.4% (91/250) in goats, and 30.78% (141/458) when the total number of animals were evaluated together. Seropositivity was found to be 66.66% (30/45) in sheep sampled from Hatay province, 56.75% (21/37) in goats, and 62.19% (51/82) when the total number of animals were evaluated together. With this study, it was aimed to obtain information about the serological presence and seroprevalence of AKAV infection in sheep and goats in Hatay and Adana provinces and to contribute to the literature with current data.
