Abstract

Yield performance and some quality characteristics of 20 breeding lines derived from crossing of NC-7 x 75/1073 were evaluated in the field experiments between 2002 and 2004 at the Experimental Farm of Faculty of Agriculture, Mustafa Kemal University, Hatay, Türkiye. Crossing between NC-7 and 75/1073 were made at the Department of Field Crops, Çukurova University Faculty of Agriculture in 1993, and selections were continued until 2002. Some plant characteristics of lines and cultivars were given in Table 1. Amik Plain, located in the Hatay province, is in the East Mediterranean region of Turkey. Some important climatic data of experimental site was presented in Table 2. The field experiments were laid out in the randomized complete block design with three replications in each year. Each plot consisted of four rows of 5 m in length with inter- and intra-row spacing of 70 cm and 25 cm, respectively. Plots were fertilized with 4.5 kg/da N, P, K before planting, and additional nitrogen dose at 4.6 kg/ha was applied at the 50% flowering. Seeds were sown by hand on May 1, May 2 and May 12 in 2002, 2003 and 2004, respectively. Standard cultural practices were applied throughout the growing season. Two middle rows of each plot were harvested by hand on October 7, October 21 and December 8 in 2002, 2003 and 2004, respectively. Pod yield per decar, the number of pods per plant, seed/shell rate, 100-seed weight, protein content and oil content were determined as yield and quality parameters. Data were analyzed using standard analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique and means were separated using least significant difference (LSD) comparisons. Results of ANOVA were given in Table 3, and mean values for evaluated traits were presented in Table 4-6. The results of three years study revealed that the new groundnut lines differed significantly for all investigated characteristics under the Amik Plain conditions. Most of the lines showed better performance than the standard cultivars in respect to evaluated yield and quality traits. When three years mean were considered, seed yield values of lines/cultivars were ranged from 395.8 kg/da (Hat-5) to 621.5 kg/da (Hat-18). In respect to pod yield values, lines Hat-18, Hat-17, Hat-10, Hat-16 and Hat-1 were found as the most promising lines for the Amik Plain. Hat-10, Hat-11 and Hat-14 were also found as outstanding lines for protein content, and the lines Hat-19, Hat-18 and Hat-9 for oil content.
